Gandos: What I want to know is whether or not the retail version will be DRM free.
avatar
Crassmaster: I doubt there will be one. Paraox has gone pretty much entirewly digital, because they were losing money on the cost of producing/shipping retail copies.
I see. Well, in that case, I'm glad I got my retail copy of Europa Universalis III: Chronicles while I had the chance.

I wonder if they will at least consider an alternative form of selling physical copies in the future. The nice thing about PC as a platform is that you have the option to make and sell physical copies yourself without having to deal with retailers.
Well, that's a shame, although I don't dislike Steam so much that it will prevent me from buying EU 4.

Frankly this shows that the whole DRM-hating segment of the gaming community is just a very vocal, but very small, minority, and that developers can safely ignore them without suffering much of a loss.
And it shows that bowing to the demands of people on your forum is a very bad idea, since they're not t all representative of the silent majority.

has this not been common knowledge for a long time now?

If you want to follow the same kind of silly logic then Diablo III is a very huge majority of gamers doesn't care about games using always online DRM and that it's a very bad idea for devs to not use said always online DRM on all their games as the silent majority doesn't mind them.

keeveek: Crusader Kings 2 was steam only at first too, and then they made steam free version on GamersGate.

Also, Paradox games on steam are DRM Free anyway - you can run them without steam launched.
They said there were looking to use achievements and other Steam "features" for EU4 so nothing tells if that will also be true for this one.

Not a good example as people never had the option to buy that DRM free. Here they did. They specifically gave that choice after a lot of demand on the forums, and the result was still underwhelming, despite it giving them extra headaches with different patches etc.

sajin: And no, there won't be a non-steam version..
Well I enjoy their games a lot... but I definitely don't enjoy them enough to add them to my "to buy despite using DRM" list... "niche" games and Indy are two types of games I will most probably never buy with DRM, so I guess I won't buy a Paradox game again anytime soon.

The funny thing is that I started buying Paradox games, without knowing anything about them, because they were DRM-free in the first place.

Games you can run without Steam launched may well have hardware authentication or other such DRM.
I think within 5 years, might be quicker than that, there will be very few physical games sold. Sales of digital games has already gone so far, that I've actually seen one game box in sale, that only contaided the DL code for the actual game. It had no other content. The whole existence of that game box felt very absurd.

I don't recall the games name though.

The main 'problem' is, this game doesn't.
I don't play Paradox games so this doesn't affect me but... What's the reason for Steam only?

I mean, the game is developed fully so aren't they making a stupid decision? It's one thing if you won't make it for a specific platform but service? Do they really want people to buy the game...? Perhaps Valve is covering the costs but I don't think that's likely, that's a Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo method.

Or this shows that if you want to sell DRM-free games you should sell them on GOG, not on GG.

Their majority of sales are digital/Steam already. Steamworks offers a lot of cost cutting help for developers in a ready made platform with achievement/social/matchmaking etc already implemented, not to mention Steamworks itself saves developers a boatload for not having to host the game/patches etc.

Steamworks is free so you can see why developers would go for that, especially if most of their sales are Steam sales already anyway.
According to them, that 5% isn't worth to pursue. That's a bold statement coming from any developers. But again they're just small - medium sized devs, maybe they're rightly to make that decision.
I only buy Paradox games from GG :(
Mainly cause the expansions work with my retail games (download limit so can't buy full games)

Given that, judging from that Paradox thread, even among that 5% there's a fair number who'll probably buck up and get the game anyway it seems like a good choice.
