What that ecodesign regulation says is that the input power of new appliances must be reduced. But from what I understand the objective is to improve the efficiency of the vacuum cleaners. In other words, getting the same level of performance for a lower electric consumption.

I agree with that. In my previous post (edit : post_11) I should have said that high pressure may help for cleaning 'moquette' (translate yourselves :p ), but most people I know don't like it in the first place (too much hassle to even slightly clean up).

The EU does have a fair few positive points about it, however the negatives are abundant too. Indeed, the national and EU governments' lack of initiative on the negatives are causing a significant amount of far right parties to be making ground recently.

As for vacuum cleaners, I can't imagine global warming going away because of this legislation.

As others have said (and despite the sensational reporting) this is about efficiency not dumb regulations for no reason. The new regs include, amongst other things, a minimum ability to pick up dust and a maximum dust re-emission limit (i.e. dust that gets blown out of the exhaust). This should mean better, quieter, more durable, more efficient vacuum cleaners all round.

The best vacuum cleaners aren't the ones that use the most power.

Perhaps, although I feel that the resources put into drawing up and passing this legislation may have been better utilised in looking at areas where much larger energy savings could be achieved. Still, every little helps.

Also why is this reported now? It went through the legislative process last year and it doesn't come into effect until September. So it's a bit late to change anything and it's a bit early to inform consumers it's coming into effect.

I'd think twice before applauding the EU for any of its nonsense regulations. Now it's your vacuum cleaner, tomorrow it's your carpet and the day after tomorrow it's your spiffy high powered 3D cards and I doubt this will make gamers happy.

The light bulb matter was definitely not one of the EU's finer moments - while it does reduce energy consumption considerably, energy-saving bulbs are extremely damaging to the eyes. The effects of that directive are going to be causing bigger problems in the long run.

Mandating reductions in vacuum cleaner power consumption is a good idea though, as the industry has shown little motivation to do it on its own. Vacuum cleaners are extremely inefficient devices, and much of the energy consumed is wasted on the huge amount of noise that they generate.

Never heard that one before. I thought they just sucked in general(don't light up a room as well, they a long while to get up to maximum brightness). Never hear about that eye thing, care to explain?
