I just picked up the Limited Edition for $20.00 and when starting the game it says there is a large update to install and wants to have me log into Impulse. Of course I do not have an account and really do not care to have one. Is it possible to update this game elsewhere or am I stuck creating yet another account? Thanks.

Updates only available through Impulse. Welcome to Stardock's "We don't use DRM on our games" DRM.

Yeah the good old "We don't use any DRM on the retail version of our games..................... but as soon as you ever update the game an online activation DRM will be installed forcing you to reactivate you game online should you change your hardware will be installed" DRM

Still waiting for those "DRM-free" fully updated DVD-R they were supposed to start sending in September/October 2010
If you have the game legally I beleive after a 5 second glance SKIDROW have the 1.11 patch available through certain means.

That's actually not true. At all. They do require use of a registered Impulse account to update the game, but there's no really activation, and you can freely change your hardware, install it on multiple computers, and so forth. You don't need a constant internet connection, and don't have to download the update on the same computer where it's installed. This is a form of DRM, I suppose, but it's minimally intrusive, which is the whole point. If you don't like it, don't get the update. The game itself will still run, although unfortunately the box release was very, very buggy. Future sequals of the game will only be purchaseable on Impulse in the first place, so everyone who gets it will have an account already anyhow.

I'm a big fan of impulse by the way.

I never tried with Elemental so maybe they change thing...again.... but I tried with Sins and GalCivII and Demigod.

If you try to copy the install folder to another computer or change something significant in your hardware you will end up with a nice popup asking you to enter you e-mail and password to reactivate the game online. You don't need impulse but you still need an online connection.

1.11 is a really nice patch, so I would strongly recommend you don't play the game much until you apply it. Aside from getting it via torrent, you're pretty much stuck with creating an account. Keep in mind Gamestop has bought Impulse, so that may influence your use of Impulse in the future.

Those who cry and moan about the DRM in E:WoM are probably not owners of the game. I log into Impulse every four to six weeks to check for patches, then shut it down and enjoy my game on my desktop and laptop as I see fit until I feel like checking for patches again. If that's DRM, it's the kind of DRM we can all live with.

You can thank Brad Wardell for that bit of douchebaggery. He can't distinguish between support and gameplay enhancements. They basically have mandatory "registration" to get patches. Now they used to make extra content, for free, and require registration for that. Arguably that is okay. Requiring registration to get a broken game running and/or balanced is pretty much BS, Stardock owes that to anyone whether they wish to register or not.

Yep, agreed 100%. What worries me is it looks like CDPR is doing the same kind of thing with The Witcher 2.
Thanks all - Looks like I will have to register in order to update - I guess it could be worse.

I don't think so, the launcher is a value add. Since the game has no DRM, neither will the patches, anyone will be able to grab them. There's no reason to believe they will be locked down. Brad's little crazy/control freak stuff developed over half a decade of him going off the deep end. I think TW2 will be fine.

The client blows, but you don't need to run it at all to launch the game, so it's just for updates. With your login you should be able to download using the client to any machine (just like I understand that Steam works) so I guess you could argue there's some value add. If you don't have IE8 I suggest you update, their client relies on IE and looks like hell in anything below 8 or so.

No, one's already in development. Sales started off poor, but have increased since. Plus, they are giving away the first two sequels free to those who bought the game last year, which includes me, by the way.
