DosFreak: Just because a game is released for free on the developer/publisher website doesn't mean it's legal to download it elsewhere.
These links should probably be removed.......

I think that is a bit over the top there, as Bethesda allows you to download the games for free and all that guy did was set them up for people in Dos Box. He didn't modify any files, and the guy who IS modifying files, the dude behind DaggerXL, was told by Bethesda they had no issue with it.

I have no idea if it's the same guy who works on DaggerXL nor does it matter.
From the webpage:
"22/01/10 : I sent a Email to bethesda Softworks. I don't receive any answer at this time"
I could say the same about murdering someone, sending the cops an email and not receiving a reply so it must be legal, right?

DaggerXL guy is creating an engine from zero, doing a lot of guess work as far as I know.
Similar to DarkXL.

That's the most bat-shit insane comparison I have ever heard.

Actually DaggerXL and DarkXL are being made by same person, luciusdxl.

Wow, comparison fail.

Yeah, and sadly the real work on DaggerXL is waiting for DarkXL to be complete, last I heard. Though I certainly want both, so I shouldn't complain.
Dear Lucius, if you read this message, please cancel DaggerXL and DarkXL immediately and start working on LandsofLoreXL.
I'm sure Elder Scrolls / Star Wars fans will understand that... or not.

The original was 2D, not sure what anyone could do with it... if you mean the others, wow would that be a project.

Well, at least you stayed within the world of rational thought with that clusterfuck of a comparison...
Oh...
People have been pretty hard on DosFreak about his comparison, while ignoring the fact that he's still right :)

Was he right? Probably. He still made a ridiculous comparison between the legality of a game release and the legality of MURDER.
Seriously, why in the gaming world do we constantly get these ridiculous hyperboles thrown out as 'apt comparison'.

If you're the most anal retentive person about copyright maybe, but for most people it won't matter where they download their free game. I doubt Bethesda is worried about their free game releases being free to download elsewhere as well.

I agree completely, just reiterating that it wouldn't hold up in a legal sense. Which I thought was DosFreaks original point.
In hopes of not derailing this thread further I checked out DaggerXL and it really looks promising, Id definitely love something like that for Ultima Underworlds. I seem to be getting the urge to play oblivion now with some major moddage.
I couldn't seem to get to the DarkXL site though, anyone else having issues?

*facepalm*
Or, to be more precise, to send the developers an email that you enhanced their free to download game and will be picking up their bandwidth costs, while getting no reply as of yet. He is completely in the realm of legality. Now if he gets a negative reply, then we're talking about copyright violation, but just barely (you know, the whole free download thing).
