You misunderstood what they said.

They were asked if Genesis will be available on Steam, and they said that unfortunately, it will be only available through preorder.

It wasn't a promise, it was a statement that this is the only possible way to get Genesis on steam.

I'm amazed someone could read that the way OP did.

Protoss: Well, they could have given keys for Desura or GOG or a DRM-free download for Genesis and I would be perfectly fine. But they said it will be only available on Steam via the pre-order, and it is not. If they would have told the truth, I would have saved my 20 Euro.
My understanding from that post you quoted is that Genesis was unavailable to Steam users separately due to problems, possibly technical or contract-related issues. As it stands, Genesis is still not available directly through Steam. Snowbird Games sold the game everywhere else DRM-free - including at retail - so there was no need for Steam keys.

The keys that were provided in the bundle were for MotBW and Genesis together, and it's good and possible that the two games can only be offered together on Steam, and that Genesis cannot be offered directly through Steam for whatever reason.

Never underestimate the clusterfuck that is IP licensing.
That's why I never preorder. At some point every game will show up discounted and with all preorder dlc's or whatever included (like a GOTY)
My guess it has something to do with greenlight...

Anyway - the OP has a slightly distorted view on the topic, as outlined by SLP2000 and jamyskis.

Issue 161: Dismissed due to irrelevance.

It looks pretty clear to me that you are reading the quote out of context, as others have pointed out.

But putting that to one side, why don't you want other people to be able to play the game on steam? Does it lessen your enjoyment of the game (or its worth) knowing that other people can also play it on that service?

I totally understand the complaint when devs release a game in a bundle almost immediately after its been released "normally" (Botanicula style) but I just don't understand the complaint here.

Personally I want other people to play the same games I am playing so I can talk to them about them. It bums me that I don't have any real life friends who are gamers who I can talk to about Psychonauts, for example.

Yep, just a little bit of patience and you can avoid all of these problems :)
Is it really that important to get it in the Steam library specifically? The game's been available DRM free right here for quite a while now.

I guess I'm missing something here. I just don't really see why someone would spend 20 euros because they wanted a Steam version. The DRM free version (plus extras) costs 6 bucks in here.

bansama: Only on Steam will people bitch that others are now able to get a game. Talk about entitlement.
But in this case I kind of agree with these people. If the company promises an exclusive goodie for preorderers then they shouldn't give it away somewhere else too because otherwise they are playing dirty. It's not really clear what they said and they could have expressed it much better. I also don't really like exclusive content and I rarely preorder, but I value contracts and faithfulness very high. Companies should make it really clear what they mean.

I think it is easy enough to misunderstand, because not selling Genesis alone but surely selling Genesis in a bundle is kind of non obvious behavior that not everybody would expect. We don't want to end up being lawyers that read and interpret all the fineprint. I still read

"Eador. Genesis will only be available through MotBW pre-order and it's the only way to have it in your Steam game library. Unfortunately, nothing we can do about it."

as that there is no other way to get Genesis except with that pre-order. But I guess there was more context around that quote. But I would say that it was formulated somewhat unclear.

But they didn't promise it as exclusive goodie, they just said it's the only way to provide the game on Steam. They said "unfortunately", so they wanted (want?) to sell it on Steam, but they can't. So they provide that game for people who preorder, but that's not the same as exclusive goodie.

Okay, then it doesn't apply here. The quote in the third post sounded a bit different. "only way to have it in your Steam library" sounds like it's exclusive. They could have added "but we will sell it in other bundles" to make it really clear.

Keveek put it better

amok: it is still "the only way to have it in your Steam library"....
So it will not appear with the new bundle although it will be included? Not sure how the Steam library works.

Anyway - at the time that post was written, it was the only way. Dont forget that this post is 6 months old - BM9 was not conceived at that point in time.

Do you really thing they need to put, in a quick forum post, something like this:

"Eador. Genesis will only be available through MotBW pre-order and it's the only way to have it in your Steam game library*. Unfortunately, nothing we can do about it.

* We may at some point in the future sell the game which have a Steam key for both games. We may sell the game at some point in the future at other DD stores which have a key with both games. A Steam key which have both games may be sold in bundles in the future. We do not know this yet, as this is something which may happen. It may be possible in the future that a deal is worked out between Valve and us getting separate entries for both games. However, at this point in time, this is the only way to have the game in your Steam library. We will see if the crystall ball may reveal other ways and come back to you."
