Of course they're entitled to compete. Competition is good. Other sites offer different services with different benefits. GOG offers games that are, well, good and old and its USP is that the games are DRM-free and fixed for compatibility. GamersGate offers sort of the same thing but also offers mainstream DRM'd stuff. Desura offers a platform for DRM-free indie games. GameTap offers a rental service. OnLive offers game streaming (if that's your cup of tea).
Origin, on the other hand, is nothing but a slow, clunky, carbon copy of Steam. Which, in its own right, wouldn't be that bad if EA didn't keep insisting that they weren't trying to compete with Steam, even though they're copying over their features one by one and are trying to woo third-party publishers.
