Most likely not; a lot of their games which are restricted are also exempt from gifting.

Oh, are you sure it's on Impulse and not GOG? It looks the same to me.

None of which logically pertains to this situation. All of those games have been released in the UK through retail. All are published by EA in the UK.
"Protection: SecuROM"
There's the vital clue.

You know what, it might just be Mass Effect. I'm reading the disclaimer things on each page now. I remember users saying back when this announcement was made the Steam versions didn't have it, but I guess they do (except Mass Effect).
The only EA games on Steam with SecuROM are Crysis and Crysis Warhead. The rest of them, Red Alert 3, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, Need for Speed, etc. have no DRM other than Steam.
Red Alert 3 left some SecuROM files in the download and people went apeshit, so Steam removed them and "patched" the game.
It is a shame the Impulse games have SecuROM. I don't know what happened with Steam and EA since no games have been released on there since the initial batch, not even the download only RA3 expansion. Maybe they had a falling out? It sucks, because with retail and the other download sites having SecuROM, I would much rather go with Steam DRM.
Hopefully before Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 Steam and EA kiss and make up.

In the likelyhood that there will be DLC for those titles and you want said DLC, don't waste your time purchasing over Steam. It is already apparent, going by current titles, that EA have little desire to provide Steam compatible DLC.
In my case mind, seeing the complete lack of EA on Steam, I'll be resorting to having to pay the horredous import markups if I want to play either of those. I certainly won't be using the EA store (which will have it's own horrible mark up for ME2 and force you to use the shitty EADM).

I've been using the EADM for a while now and I kinda like it. Given it is made by EA I was expecting much worse.

You've been lucky I guess. The first game I purchased as a test refused to download correctly over 5 times. Then when it finally did download correctly, the game wouldn't activate claiming that the CD key was invalid/already in use.
The second game I purchased through it did at least activate -- after two days worth of download attempts.
The only trouble free purchase I've had from the EA store has been Burnout Paradase The Ultimate Box (and that was only because the game could be activated from the demo -- which I downloaded from a different source).
Actually, even that purchase wasn't 100% trouble free seeing as the product page wasn't allowing purchases (throwing up a server error) for several days before I finally managed to get hold of support to have that fixed.

You may want to double check that. The interesting part about the other games compared to Mass Effect is the disclaimer at the bottom of the game page. Mass Effect's Disclaimer:
* INTERNET CONNECTION AND END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY. MORE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT WWW.EA.COM.
Which just means Steam need you to be on-line when you first play the game. No biggie.
Now, let's look at what's on Mirror's Edge, Red Alert 3, etc.
INTERNET CONNECTION, ONLINE AUTHENTICATION AND ACCEPTANCE OF END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY
Note the addition of "Online Authentication". Maybe there's no SecuROM, but there's something different there. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but these games all had SecuROM and on-line authentication in the retail versions, so I suspect it's still there and just isn't being listed due to the outcry about it re Crysis - and ALL of those games appeared after Crysis.
Not just US. Canada and Mexico as well. Sorry to nitpick, but I'm in Canada and we're NOT part of the US.

Cool. Thanks for the info Bansama. I wonder why those games have that odd 'online authentication' part in the disclaimer though.
