Elmofongo: I am more dissipointed that the GOG version of Dungeon Keeper 1 is DOS and not Windows.
I have Dungeon Keeper Gold (which is the "Windows version"), and I think it can be quite tricky, if not impossible, to get it to run on modern 64bit Windowses.
I think I got it to run fine on an old WinXP PC, but even there it felt a bit glitchy somehow... or maybe it was how the screen kept flickering when the Windows version was changing screen modes or resolutions or something.
Since the Gold version includes also DOS versions of both Dungeon Keeper and Deeper Dungeons, I decided to play them instead in DOSBox. The DOS version just seems to run more coherently, in lack for a better word.
I think the only thing the Windows version has over the DOS version is that it adds Direct3D HW support. While that makes the graphics look a bit smoother (or fuzzier, like when looking at zoomed objects in first person view, which normally are quite pixellated), it apparently also lacks some visual effects that are present only with the DOS/SW version, like the lens effect in the first person view.
And in the normal overhead view, IMHO the Direct3D and SW renderer differences are not that big anyway.
Ok, I am not sure if the level editor is only in the Gold edition, in case someone is after that.
