Licurg: I'm pretty sure there's an open-source remake of Dune 2 that's freeware and working on modern systems, just can't remember where you download it from.

Theta_Sigma: Ooh, this looks promising, do you need anything to run it or is it just install and go?
I tried it and it worked fine on my 64bit win7 laptop. I remember though that I had to download something extra to get the fmv movies so just remember to look into that (perhaps I am remembering it wrong - perhaps it is already included in Gruntmods? ). Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what I downloaded although I did definitely end up downloading the Gruntmods version and it worked.

Fantastic, thank you for the heads up. :)

Fever_Discordia: There's also 'Frank Herbert's Dune' by Cyro but people will probably hurts me for reminding them! (it wasn't very good, by all accounts)
*cough* I kinda liked it.

Cool man hope you have fun with it :)

IMHO the original is still fun to play and perhaps better than dune2000, or at least the modded/modified versions of it eg Dune2:The Golden Path. Regardless as a huge dune2 fan I always wanted to check out dune2000 even though the chief complaint was that it was essentially dune2 with better graphics. My only real complaint is that it doesn't hsave the awesome artwork of dune2

I still think I have a copy of EVERY Dune game on CD around here somewhere. I got into the games because the Dune novels were my bed time stories at one point.

Thanks. LONG LIVE THE MONKEYS!

I'm well aware that I tend to post this picture in every single Dune-related thread but it's just awesome :D

Cool stuff. It's the reverse for me: I got into the novels because I loved the games. I wish I was a mentat :)

The only unfortunate thing about Dune is that, in contrast to other books, it just doesn't feel right to read it while its raining :P

Awesome, I think Frank did a fantastic job with the books, it's kind of a shame Brian just wasn't up to par with his entries.

Haha, well that's true. Poor, poor sand worms, they were probably one of my favourite parts of the Dune universe.

Yep, that's the one. Never downloaded it myself, so can't say how well it works.
Played Dune 2 again last year and it was cool to remember the days as a kid but its hard to go back.
I'd rather see Dune 3 on GOG.

I replayed both Dune 2 and Dune 2000 about two years ago I think (or was it one year ago?). The last Harkonnen mission in Dune 2 was funny, in that you had to make sure that the amount of units (either yours or enemy's) didn't go past certain limit, because after that the game became unplayable as neither side could produce any more units, nor even fight each other, as shooting a mere bullet would have been considered as creating a new item by the game engine.

So there they were, lots of soldiers and tanks just staring at each others. :) The workaround was to try to kill as many enemies and enemy buildings early on, long before that limit was reached, no turtle shell defense. It needed a couple of retries.

Solei: Haven't tested it yet, but according to the webpage its fully Windows Vista/7/8/XP compatible.

The installation archive weighs around 471MB so it should be fully self-contained.

Theta_Sigma: Awesome, I'll probably snag it then. Thanks for the link. :)

roninnogitsune: Yeah, I here the Frank Herbert Estate is difficult to deal with lately, they're probably sore after the reception of the Brian Herbert Dune books and have circled the wagons on the franchise.
avatar
Theta_Sigma: I admit there are some things with Brian's work I do like, but for the most part I think the poor reception is not unwarranted.
yeah, it wasn't unwarranted and that's probably why, I think they realized that the move weakened the Brand of Dune and didn't want to weaken it anymore so just leaving the books to speak for themselves. I don't blame them, both movies weakened the brand. The David Lynch movie was a mess, a fun mess but still a mess; The Sci Fi channel miniseries was just awful, they stayed close to the book but terrible design and horrid acting (the only actor capable of acting had his character killed off early.) So I don't think they want to ruin Frank Herbert's legacy anymore.
