granny: I see the "Steam is the very font from which all life springs" brigade is still present :-)
avatar
GameRager: More like the "It's not so bad/Take the lesser of two or more evils" brigade is present. :P
Yeah, perhaps. I just couldn't resist, though :-)

GameRager: If you can't hack the data files out of steam or don't have the morals to download a torrented non steam copy(after buying the steam copy to support the devs of course), then it's your loss.
My loss? If I were that desperate to play the game, I'd just buy it. I'm not.
Being interested in a game is not exactly being desperate for it.
avatar
Mentalepsy: Screw it, then. Not that I was terribly eager to play this anyway, but I'm not willing to pay to be irritated.
avatar
GameRager: 1. The DRM used could have been MUCH MUCH worse.
The thing is, it could be much, much better too. Settling for the lesser evil is not the best option either. We should be pushing for the best option, imho.

GameRager: If you were wanting to play it before you heard about Steam then you were/are at least partially desperate/wanting to play it....you're just curbing yourself is all.
Not really, it's more like when I heard there was going to be a Green Lantern live action movie. I wanted to go watch it but after I heard that Ryan Reynolds was going to play Hal Jordan I immediately said "fuck it, no way in hell I'm gonna watch that". Then I watched the trailer and confirmed my suspicions that the movie will be shit.
Why bother with something that you know you are going to hate? If Steam ruins your experience of the game then the best option is to not buy it.
In my case I knew I wasn't going to pay full price for a Duke Nukem game but now that I know that it has Steam too I know for sure than I won't pay more than $5 for it if anything at all. There are better games to buy this year and I won't even pay full price for Portal 2 because I know it will go down in price really fast.

Mmm, might pick it up when it will be 75% off. Until then, meh.
Most of the time i say the hell away from these steam threads. For some reason i'm crazier today.

Game has steamworks and your going to buy it?Good for you!I won't be buying it.
Sure there is good things and bad things about steamworks. For some the bad things out weight the good things and for some its the other way around.

Lets say i'm a fan of dragon age origins and dragon age 2 uses bad drm/steam.
Then lets say i won't be buying da2.
Sure the bad drm/steam is a reason i won't be buying the game.
First off i don't need the game to live, there are many games i have not play and didn't die by not buying and playing them.

Cost a good 50$ and no playable game demo.
Sure i could watch a video of it. For me videos don't give off a good idea of how the game feels.
Sure i could risk the 50$ and buy dragon age 2,then end up feeling like i wasted 50$ for buying a bad game or like it if the game turns out to be good.
I could just forget about the game and spend that 50$ right here on gog.Drm free and a good number of the games have demos, letting me get a feel for it before buying it.
Risk 50$ on one game or risk it on 5 games?

My point? Most games that i drop off my want list this year had drm i didn't like and no game demo. Not giving me much reason at all to think its going to be a game i like. Why risk the money on a game i may not like?I for one find it hard to trust game review these days.Sure it could be i read one two many stories about a reviewer getting pay off to give a game a higher score or bad reviews which tell me nothing about a game.

In the end, if their is no reason for me to think a game is the worth risk and no reason that makes me think hey i may like this game, no big lost at my end. Many other games out their i could spend my money on.

No, that would be me.

I don't know why people are surprised. I knew once gearbox took over that there was a 100% chance steam would be the drm of choice. Using steam is probably the best possible choice they could have made when insisting on having some form of drm attached to it.

And YES, there will be a demo.

Great, another game I won't be able to play. It's like publishers these days just don't want my money anymore!

Hopefully it gets released on GOG someday. Either that or a DRM free retail release, but that would be surprising.

I didn't say I didn't want to play it, I just said I can live without it. DNF wasn't going to be a day-one purchase for me anyway, but I likely would have bought it down the road for a little less cash. So why should I deprive myself, you ask?

I don't have a lot of patience for bullshit getting in the way of my games. I know a lot of people like Steam, and I can see why they do, but to me, it's just extra hassle and bulk. DRM issues aside, Steam eliminates the transparency and straightforwardness that I want in favor of annoying bloat that I don't want. I also just don't really want to give my money to companies that willfully waste my time with nonsense like mandatory clients.

As I said in another thread a while back, I actually prefer something like a 5-activation Securom to Steam, because while I don't mind paying a few bucks for the Securom rental that I play once or twice, Steam starts getting on my nerves right out of the gate.
I'm very surprised people are shocked at this, the pub 2K has a long history of attaching DRM to games, finally they chose one that is reasonable to the majority of PC gamers, at least.

Those who do not wish to buy it new can always wait for a steam ripped out version to pop up on another DD site. Personally I am extremely glad steamworks is being used, I have had horrible, horrible experiences with DRM in the past, none of them steamworks games.

I'll wait for the reviews and gameplay videos though, there are 13(?) years worth of expectations on the game, I don't want to blow my money on a massive failure of a game.

I think a lot of us didn't want to believe that. Given it's Duke, such a move is not right. It would be nice if they included system requirements, I know I've said it before but it definitely needs repeating, it's way too late for Gearbox to not be providing system requirements. I mean they're already offering up reorders.

OK . . . who are you and what have you done with uruk????

hedwards: Given it's Duke, such a move is not right.
What do you mean by that? I can't really see how Duke being Duke has anything to do with this.

Interestingly enough, if I were interested in DNF, which I'm not, I wouldn't care about this bit of news at all. Just wanted to throw this into the thread to make sure all opinions are represented here. For the future historians, you know.
I think it's downright silly to not buy a game because it uses Steamworks.
