Whiteblade999: Cool, I was expecting something like Ubisoft DRM. Never had an issue with Steam since its easy to rip the files for a backup so I will be getting this on sale I think.
What I don't understand is if you plan on "removing" Steam, how is it better than Ubi DRM ?
Copy a simple crack to remove Ubi-drm seems to me a lot easier than the ripping of files + applying crack that you have to do with Steam.

GameRager: 2: Thing is, as I said before a boycott won't work if enough people still buy/torrent the game in question, and as not many are willing to boycott for various reasons the numbers could be 1 million torrent downloads or even 100,000 people downloading and not boycotting and it wouldn't make any difference.
Boycotting might only have one change out of a million to make a difference, one thing for sure not doing has even even less chance of making a difference.

By the way, if you torrent the game you don't only download it but, given how bittorent protocol works, you are also distributing the pirated version, helping others, who might not have bought the game, obtaining it for free.
I would still buy it on PC, but I'll be getting it on 360, if I get it at all. I can't exactly pass around a PC game, and most of my PC purchases are now niche/old games I can't get on a console. Even Portal 2 will be on the 360, so I can play co-op with a buddy on a big screen.

Between this and the other games I originally wanted, I am saving quite a bit of money this year. Three games off the list thanks to Steamworks. I'll grab 'em at the bargain bin.

Witcher 2 is the only game left at this point in time that is getting a full price, day one purchase from me. No Steam, no DRM, no nothing. Just a game, and how it should be.

GameRager: Aren't you AGAINST pirating?
Yes, which is why I put the whole "which, I hasten to add, has not happened for any game ever" into brackets there. The reason for that caveat was to point out that I'm never going to be so desperate to play it.

So, not buying because I disapprove of Steamworks. Not pirating it because I disapprove of such things.

GameRager: Still, if something is of such a low probability then it may as well be zero.
This hypothesis screams for a poll at CivFanatic who didn't bought Civ5 because of steamworks. Believe it or not, but there are many people out there who can pass a game.

GameRager: Oh stop crying and shaking your rattle at the big bad steam already and buy the game....you KNOW you'll just KICK yourself if you miss out.
How am I missing out? I'll grab it when it hits bargain bin prices (<$10), same as I do other games with excessive DRM. I'm not going to stop standing up for what I believe in for the sake of a few games.

GameRager: Still if enough DO buy the game then the companies aren't going to listen to almost any amount of boycotters you can pull together.
But it will maybe enought to release a steamworks-free version someday, so everyone is happy.
Good, I loathe GFWL.

The important thing is not numbers, what's important is how much noise you make. Do you really think Apple removes DRM from music files (for now at least) because the majority of peoples didn't like them or because their sales were low ? No it was just because the anti-DRM minority manage to make enough noise for them to think it might be a good PR move to remove them.

GameRager: Stand up for what you believe in if you want, but i'd rather only majorly back causes that have a good probability of accomplishing something. ;)
"I stand up for my beliefs... but only if the majority is behind me..." you should start a career in politic ? :-)

Ubisoft's DRM doesn't provide a backup in itself on their servers. Not to mention I will play a game with Steam DRM and backup a copy just in case. I will never touch an Ubi game with that DRM because my net goes up and down a lot.

Lucibel: By the way, the offline mode for Steam provides me with some peace of mind that I can continue to access my games, BUT I recently had a power cut while my PC was on and Steam was running. After trying to log in again later, some Steam files were corrupted so I wasn't able to use offline mode - are there any specific Steam files I can backup to protect against this?
That's not corruption. Steam needs to call daddy every now and then, offline mode or not.
Screw it, then. Not that I was terribly eager to play this anyway, but I'm not willing to pay to be irritated.
I see the "Steam is PURE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL" brigade is still present.

GameRager: 1. The DRM used could have been MUCH MUCH worse.
2. The future DRM games could be using could also be much worse and thus make even UBIDRM seem fair in comparison so IMO it's best to play as much as possible before then.

3. Such DRM can be stripped out using cracks or copying the data files out of the Steam folders.

4. I dunno......more game for teh Steam lovers then?
I didn't say anything about DRM. I just think Steam is a damned irritating program.
