predcon: Jaegermeister is awful, like liquid licorice. I'm amazed at how much attention this game is getting for it's "insensitivity", and how other mainstream entertainment delivers just as much "anti-groupofyourchoice" humour and no one bats an eye. Like, Tosh.0 or Reno911!. Daniel Tosh has delivered at least one rape joke per show, and everyone loves him. The point being that the setting presented in the game is not meant to be taken seriously.

It wasn't long ago everyone was defending GTA for just about every offense imaginable, but then the chief prosecutor was Jack Thompson. Good God! Can you imagine the shitstorm he'd raise over this? I mean, he's already locked horns with 2K Games before, and lost...
I'm pretty sure it's only okay to be insensitive towards "the gheys" or whatever (like The Hangover 2), or maybe making fun of the stupid American husband, but NOT women anymore. I'm not defending or promoting it, just agreeing with you that there's a serious doublestandard going on here.

EDIT: I read the Ars Technica review, it was not kind. I don't have time for anything else just now.

I have no intention of buying DNF. It's been too long and I've lost interest. I can remember way back when Dai Katana was supposed to be the best thing going and it was crap. Of course, it could be that I was in high school when DNF was announced and now I'm in my 40's....
As for violence in games I think it's crap that it has anything to do with violence in society. Pure bull. We don't want to believe that someone, especially a kid can be violent and/or evil so we need to find a scapegoat. When I was growing up, there was a big focus on "satantic" heavy metal music and how it was corrupting my generation. I listened to and I was fine. Playing Dungeons and Dragons was supposed to warp your sense of reality. It didn't. Playing FPS games of course, would send you right our the door with a chainsaw just ready to hack apart the first innocent person you met. Me and my friends all turned out fine. What's funny is my one friend that experimented with drugs like LSD, Cocaine and got in trouble with the law was the most straight laced Felix Unger type kid you could meet.
It warms my heart to think I am now the proud owner of the most hated game since Daikatana. I can't play it though because it crashes at launch. Is first hand disappointment a necessary component of the experience or is the lengthy, embarrassing reputation all that really matters?

There's nothing wrong with making fun of women if there are actually jokes and it's clear that the person making the joke doesn't actually hate them same as anything else. God knows I've heard TONS of comedians bitch about their wives. And then there's every Judd Apatow movie.

But it's not okay to say "if my son told me he was gay I'd stab him" and try to play it off as a joke, because it's not. There's no punchline, it's just a hateful statement, which is why people jumped on Tracy Morgan. And it's not okay to have crying naked women screaming "I want my daddy" and make rape references and then claim it's a parody of something, because it isn't. There's no subversion, no referencing, it's just... mean. And pointless.

Eh, gay jokes are typically OK as long as they're actually funny. We tend to laugh at them as long as they're actually funny and or clever. It's mostly the stereotypes wrapped in pseudo humor that doesn't work.

sethsez: Nobody is coming at this from a "think of the children" perspective. Calling George Broussard an asshole who (at best) can't tell a joke to save his life and (at worst) has some serious issues with women is not the same as asking the game to be taken off the market or whatever.

Broussard is free to make and release his game, but I'm free to say he seems like a creep.
I'm just a little tuna. Have pity on me. I really wasn't talking about how good DNF is or isn't (I have no idea anyway), or if its content is something I approve of personally or don't. I'm sorry if you bought a game you hate and now have buyers remorse or some such, I can understand that, really. :D
My dialouge was aimed at people be they politicians, lawyers, relgious figures or whomever else, who seem to believe that PC games in general are the source of crime and other problems for many young adults. I'm sure said people are probably not on this site and I wasted much typing energies, but, I just felt like expressing myself a little bit is all. Even a tuna needs to swim free sometimes :)

If it's a crash, I'm not sure of the fix, if it's a freeze and you've got a dual core, there's a fix for that which seems to work.

It hangs at the logo / waving US flag for a minute or two and then fatal errors and dies. I haven't found a fix either. I actually haven't even found reports of the same problem. I could try rolling back to a fresh vanilla of Windows and reinstall everything but is it really worth that much trouble?

Verify game cache through Steam. Check every driver you have.

Any joke like you mention is generally okay with good natured folks of any group. The humor in The Hangover 2, though, was insensitive as hell by all accounts. I just find it offensive that making fun of certain groups is like BBQing the sacred cow for dinner while the same folks will gladly engage in meanspirited humor/bigotry against other groups (because they're "icky" or some shit, I dunno, really, I grew up in hicksville and I still don't get it).

I've seen some reports of CTD, but no particular fixes at present.

Whether or not it's worth trying depends upon how much you want to play. Personally, I've really enjoyed the game so far. But I guess it depends upon what other games you've got and how much time you have available to devote to getting it working.

Especially since it's likely that an update is forthcoming anyways.

OTOH, if you haven't already done it, make sure to update your runtime libraries and drivers. I think I read something that suggested that some of the problems were related to the runtimes in use.

I haven't seen that one. Funny is funny, but since women in the US aren't a minority group by either size or power, I think that's why people can't typically get away with it.

I remember during my previous course of study being in the awkward position of having to defend men, whether or not I agreed with the, just because there was that thus versus them dynamic which would develop and I was completely on my own and not wanting to be a part of them.

Things change and women are definitely not able to get away with as much crap as they used to. As evidenced by the recent rash of female teachers getting nailed for inappropriate relations with their students.

hedwards: I'm defragging my HDD at the moment so I can chime in.

I started playing last night right after it unlocked. It has a few rough edges that should be patched to fix. I'm having a bit of a tough time with the controls as I'm not used to the options they're giving for the aiming reticle. And it takes a long time trying to load.

That being said, the game is awesome, It's far, far better than what I was expecting. Sure it kind of sucks that they had to limit the path, but given the amount of interactivity that is going on in various places, they could have kept working on it for years from now. Imagine an FO or FO:NV sized world with that level of interactivity, it would have taken a pretty amazingly huge development staff to finish it, let alone perfect it.

The reviews were definitely unfairly harsh. And I can definitely see this game ending up here in a few years. I'm just glad I didn't let the trolls and haters convince me to ask Valve to cancel my preorder.

In general my complaints are pretty minor and I have yet to encounter anything that can't be fixed with a patch. Most of the problems are really only problems if you've got a stick up your butt or are looking to hate the game.

As surprising as it was to me, the game is definitely a lot better than the demo, but the demo definitely was accurate in terms of the humor aspect.

I guess certain folks around here are going to be eating crow. This isn't the greatest game ever, but it's hardly the shite mess that some folks around here wanted it to be. I don't know why they ditched the boot though.
nice i dont think most people were angry or said that the game was utterly crappy. the only reason im disappointed is that the game is only average[7/10], i was wanting it to be an classic but i guess as fan, im happy that game finally got made.
so how was the multiplayer? worth it?

I can give it a shot, though I have completely forgotten my way around Windows over the years. How do I check the runtimes in XP?

Oops, missed this. Thanks for the tips. How do I do those things?

Women aren't a minority group in terms of power? Don't make me laugh. Compare the number of women in congress to the number of men. Count the number of female US presidents. See how the number of female CEOs stack up to the number of male CEOs.
