nondeplumage: You know what?

You want this kind of stuff done better? Go read DC comic's Lobo.
I'm hoping even if DNF has flaws from development hell that the next one if there is one is ever better. I remain hopeful...someone has to right?

Thanks for the input, helps alot since I'm far from being a drunken frat boy. Shooters are my second favorite genre with five or six installed at all times. I was hoping for a new, fun shooter but I have my doubts with my research here and on other sites causing me to hesitate on a purchase (9 hrs is sorta short as well) . . . as much as I enjoy the previous DN's . . . =)

Knowing several women that have been raped, I can't imagine any circumstance where I would find rape to be funny or entertaining. Game rape may not perpetuate the act but for those who have rape victims in their lives . . . they will surely find the act repulsive IMHO.

Thing is if it's integral to the story I don't see the problem with it.....though I admit some might not like it.

I myself don't care as A: I've seen worse in games, B: Have laughed at the 40lb box of rape pictures, and C: I don't equate a simulated act with the actual act as being as severr.
avatar
GameRager: You're reading too much into it...also dumb blonde jokes shouldn't be offensive to anyone.
Ever tried asking to people who have been negatively affected by that stereotype?

avatar
GameRager: Get this: Game rape isn't trying to promote & is in no way similar to real life rape.
They have been kidnapped, immobilized and genitally "impregnated" against their will.

Looks close enough to me.

avatar
GameRager: I see no one bitching about the killing of various aliens or even humans in games yet rape is a no-no.
You should watch the news more often then.

avatar
GameRager: Just as games where you kill don't promote killing, games with rape in them don't promote rape. To think they do is a logical fallacy.
I see what are you trying to do, but even as a blanket statement that is wrong: some games (like some movies or books) DO promote killing as an appropriate way of solving problems.
Duke Nukem Forever, in particular, presents a life changing trauma as a minor inconvenience ("we'll lose the extra weight in a week, we swear"), and finding that disturbing is not being oversensitive.

avatar
GameRager: Also I have pics of the 9/11 attack with funny lines on them.
Would you call anyone objecting to them "PC" or "oversensitive"?

avatar
GameRager: Again I like dark humor sometimes and believe that joking about something doesn't mean you support or endorse it.
Good dark humor is often used for poignant insights (ex. "A Modest Proposal"). DNF use of rape is utterly gratuitous.

I have a pretty twisted sense of humor but even I was turned off by this game. However, I will do what I expect everyone who doesn't like my humor does: don't get involved. I won't buy this game. Its not a boycott or statement beyend "I don't like this." My real critique is that the delivery was definitely lacking. (Haha, now THAT unintentional gem was funny!)

1. No, but it's like fat jokes......not that bad really. You're acting like blonde jokes are unacceptable evils of society or akin to racist comments against minorities.

2. By similar to real life rape I mean in that no one is hurt physically.....maybe emotionally but if you were raped or know someone who was or rape is a touchy subject for you then why buy the game at all?

3. I meant that many play games and kill/maim/etc and no one worries about it as much as with rape/nudity.

4. I meant they don't promote killing in real life......games don't make killers/etc. Also yes finding it disturbing to the point that one makes it out to be as bad as IRL rape is being oversensitive.

5. Not really, just them having different views. Of course if it were 4chan it'd be a different story as you're not allowed to be sensitive there.

Trolling beyond this line:

6. Then don't play it. And let me enjoy it already. I'm gonna totally rape the shit out of it when it gets here......oops, I said rape didn't I? My bad.

My take on it is that it's not really about promoting rape or being overly shocking as much as it's just in poor taste. I mean, they tried to make it a joke but it ends up falling flat because it's simply not witty or funny in any way, and it just makes the scene come off as very sadistic.
Screw it. I hate GOG's spartan formatting system.

Before people unleash holy hell against you for those comments I suggest you get out and meet more people. Rape is unlike anything else. You can't even compare it to having your limbs cut off slowly, the affect is long lasting and debilitating.

Doesn't matter to me, I will still joke about it. Not those that were raped mind you, but the joking pics about it.

As I said i'm into dark humor. If this makes people hate me I could care less.

predcon: It's a variation on the Alien gestation method. It's in line with Duke Nukem's overall theme of sex. It's meant to show how bad the bad guys are.
This....they're showing how the aliens use the women and makes you hate them even more. It's integral to the game in a way.

I agree it's not that good a scene but I don;t find it offensive as some do. I mean it's part of the Dukeverse, and shows more of the aliens behond the scenes bad deeds.

I wonder how they'd have the scene pulled off if they could change it though. Maybe just show women in tubes with fat bellies surrounded by chiffon curtains while soft music plays? Maybe the aliens wine and dine the women beforehand? But then that would be so realistic, what with the aliens being polite chaps and all in their invasion.
