thornton_s: Just finished it and can honestly say as a fan of shooters and the original duke this is pretty disappointing. Think along the lines of unreal 2 and doom 3 and it's pretty much the same a very average games with a few good levels and a lot of crap/tedious ones. The jokes, enemies and gameplay are pretty much the same as the original with no real improvements other than a better game engine and some new one liners which are mostly pinched from movies. I would honestly say giving it 3 out of 5 is being generous.
While I have a hard time getting into Doom 3, Doom 3 is very polished and the Doom 3 engine was state of the art when it was released.

Duke it seems doesn't know who he wants to be. Laughing at Master Chief 's expense when offered armor but then happily uses its two weapon system. Laugh at Half-Life 2 then put a puzzle in from the HL2 rejected pile.

As for the armor joke, he jokes about it because he's too tough for armor...his ego keeps him walking tall.

DodoGeo: Absolutly love turn based RPGs and strategy games, and faster RTS stuff like DOW2 or Starcraft2. I also like stuff like the old FPSs like Blood, Duke, Quake, even Bulletstorm had fun gameplay.

I like any genre if the game itself has good fun core gameplay and interesting mechanics.

GameRager: You forgot the last bit....lol. Will you buy it someday even at lower price to support a "proper"(in your eyes) sequel?
Well now, this is a dilemma.
It would reward Gearbox for a game they didn't make and send the message that I liked it. If it sells well, would we get a "proper" sequel or more of the same?
I played the "extended" demo, but I won't finish and will delete it because it isn't for me.

To clarify, I do buy games and fully support the devs, but this way I can avoid the occasional turd.
For example Kings Bounty. After playing a bit it struck a cord and became insta-buy for me and I pre-ordered every sequel because those russians deserve every penny for it.

I'm also torn with EA titles on GOG. The games are true gems, but EA stands for everything I hate in the gaming industry and would not support them, but then again I like GOG and their ideals, so I'll buy them.

Gearbox won't get my support here. In this situation I'd rather give it to the guys doing Duke Nukem Reloaded.
IMO Doom 3 was an amazing tech demo for the engine but not a great game. When you look at the design goals for Doom 3 it becomes even more apparent how much they failed on the game front.

Was it enjoyable? Parts of it, but it did get repetitive how the demons would magically appear from an area that you already cleared. And they totally missed the mark on atmosphere in favor of shock/surprise value. I never felt "scared" in Doom 3, just startled, and after the first few times it became stale and expected.

Scared or not it was fun, and omg the demons could TELEPORT....thus how they got into every area....even ones you cleared. And btw Doom 1/2 weren't scary either.

I just eventually got bored with it. Especially when the devs were originally talking about how they wanted to copy the feeling and environment of games like System Shock 2. For a mindless shooter it was fun after you added the duct tape mod, but it wasn't anything worth writing home about.

EDIT - Correct, Doom 1 & 2 weren't "scary" but at the same time the developers didn't say they were trying to make it scary either. They did say they were trying to scare you with Doom 3.

Shock scares are still scares......and sometimes the demons jumping out did scare me from not knowing when/where they would come from. Of course I didn't overanalize it like you probably did to where I could guess where they'd come from.

If you just enjoy it as just another game and ignore the hype it was pretty fun.

One question I have for you though, did you play it as it was released or mod it at all? I have to say the Sophie's choice between being able to see or shoot in an FPS has to be one of the worst things I've run across. Granted it was fixed with a simple mod but still... :)

I played vanilla for awhile then modded it with just the shotgun flashlight mod....using shotgun in totally dark areas to see/shoot, and other guns everywhere else.

I also have used the weapon mods to add in a laser sight to the pistol and a railgun shot mode to the plasma gun.
Eurogamer reviews says fans from 1996 are middle-aged now. Really? I was 16 in 1996 and now I am 30, that's not middle-aged last I checked.

Kudos to the review for calling out the two-weapon limit and recharging health though. Also for talking about how the PC version is very superior.

StingingVelvet: Also for talking about how the PC version is very superior.
Most of the reviews will be the console versions simply because that's the version reviewers want to get. You can't sell PC games on eBay or trade them in like you can console games.

Well the PC version has at least consistent frame rate, short loading time... and mouse control, that definitely an upgrade over the console versions.

I am surprise about the comments concerning difficulties, I wonder if it's just the gamepad that makes the game hard(er) on console or if the difficulty is really different than the PC version. (or maybe it's just the console choppy framerate that doesn't help)

It sounds like the Xbox version is really terrible for more than normal comparison reasons.
And of course everyone would be complaining if Duke could pick up EVERY weapon he came across. "It's not logical! It's not realistic!". *sigh*

sigh, no they wouldn't!

I have keys 0-9 and a mouse wheel. Give me all the weapons you can find Duke.
