PoSSeSSeDCoW: - Blur makes it difficult to see anything more than 10m away
avatar
StingingVelvet: Turn off depth of field/processing effects. Game looks ten times better.
Will do. Didn't really bother with the graphical settings.
avatar
GameRager: Did you get into Duke's apartment yet? If not I can tell you how.
avatar
MashiroTamigi: Tell me tell me :D
Use noclip(dnclip) in-game and jump out the hotel window and then turn around and look for a white wall and go through it.
avatar
GameRager: Also it's not one of those "pros" reviewing but a forum goer...and yes, the difficulty is THAT hard...if you don't hide behind crates like a pansy that is.(Not calling you a pansy btw)
Your are not serious are you ? or maybe you are playing on X-box...

On PC, at the highest difficulty level, the only time you actually have to be careful is when fighting the dropship, otherwise you don't need to hide behind cover anytime, heck if you are using the railgun you don't even need to dodge.

GameRager: I spent around 40 minutes in the locker room staining towels with **** and turning things on and off and pissing in every toliet, my fun with the crap ended only when it got stuck in the bath, I tried to get it out but couldnt.
I probably don't need to take this person's opinions very seriously.

And here I thought that a three-minute trailer dedicated exclusively to smearing poop on the walls was meant as a joke to poke fun at the game's own man-child image. I guess I should have known that it was actually something Gearbox was very proud of.

PoSSeSSeDCoW: My pros and cons with the DNF demo:

Pros:
+ Interactive whiteboard
+ Beginning was a rip-off of the first level from Halo, but that kinda worked for it
+ Graphics were acceptable
+ Main theme is awesome
+ Jon St. John
+ Native G15 applet

Cons:
- First boss battle it was pretty much impossible to get hit and is incredibly boring
- Blur makes it difficult to see anything more than 10m away
- Linear level design
- Puzzles easier than those in DN3D (relates to linear level design)
- Duke's personality went from Ash to Superbad
- Only carrying two weapons
- Regenerating health changes the gameplay to the worse
- Minecart physics felt really off
- Guns felt "off"
- The vehicle handling was horrible
- The vehicle sections were boring
- Music for the second level was mediocre (don't remember music in the first level)
- Gunship battle was just pop out, lock on, fire, get back into cover. It needed more variety
- The enemies you fight after getting the gas can were tedious, not particularly fun or challenging
- Already 3 sets of DLC off
- Duke controls like the CoD4+ characters, not like Duke should

That's all I can remember for now.
+Loved the whiteboard
+It's supposed to be Duke playing his own game thus the end of the last game being the start of the first...and it's from before Halo(the level it's based on I mean) so more like Halo ripped it off perhaps.
+They are at that, and remember it's using 2006 graphics btw
+Yup, Duke grabbag at it's best.
+There can be only ONE Duke.
+Sounds cool.

-Again, it's a tutorial bit and so it's supposed to be easy so you can do all the extras before killing the "bosses" on that level.(Did you shoot the blimp yet?)
-Shut off motion blur/other stuff and try again
-Duke has always been mostly linear......even in D3D. The levels back then were just arranged to act like you had a big choice of what to do/where to go.
-Puzzles are secondary, buttkicking primary....plus there's plnety more interaction in this one
-It's not that bad....Duke will get more polish and time to shine in the full game, imo.
-Two weapons but plenty of chances to pick up more or swap them in-game.....and it's Duke...does he NEED more than two at a time to take the baddies out?
-Regen health is semi-meh but try on hardest diffculty and don't hide behind cover and see what happens. Also i'm betting the AI will be improved in the full version and your regen health won't be much help then.
-I agree a bit on the minecart
-The guns need a bit of tweaking as well.
-Vehicle handling is easy once you get used to it, and it was WAY worse in the original PAX demo.
-Music ain't that bad, but quality could be amped up a nudge.
-DLC isn't the end of the world, man.

Again this is just a crappy polished turd pax demo...wait for the full version reviews before making final judgement.

So having a bit of childish fun is wrong? How pompous can you get?

No, I've played the level it's based off of. I'm referring to the part at the beginning where the soldiers are running around shooting at the aliens and you're running around in the background with no weapon while there's explosions going on, which was not in DN3D.

And honestly I'd accuse you of being a paid shill but your attempts at damage control are so ham-handed it's clear you're just an overexcited fanboy.

Shill...fanboy...loving the ad hominems are we?

Look at it this way.....I see you dissing the game left and right & I don't call you a MW/COD fanboy or competitor shill now do I? Show some decorum, for god's sake.

You are the one saying that it's "THAT hard" while we have absolutely no way of knowing except for the demo which wasn't.

You post reviews of the demo and when peoples say that they disagree with some of the review points your answer is "it's just a demo wait for the final game", make up you mind.

I can say that as that is my opinion....just as it's your opinion the game sucks. All i'm saying is wait for the full game then cast judgement, and that's just common sense when buying games anyways.

1. I'm only doing what you were accusing me of in the DRM thread. You accused me of being a shill when I said that certain types of DRM don't inconvenience me. Perhaps you need to reevaluate your own behavior.

2. It's only an ad hominem if I'm attacking you to invalidate your arguments. If I invalidate your arguments then attack you, it's just a good ol' fashioned insult.

I never called you a shill, or don't think I did. Which thread was it again?

Oh but you are doing it to invalidate my arguments, even if you're trying to deny it or just don't think you are for some reason.

It was like 3 days ago. I'm sure you remember.

and I'm glad you "know" my intentions. Your argument is weak enough on its own. I kinda just like insulting you on occasion.

I have somewhat crap short term memory....I forget things on occasion...again, thread link please?

Oh just piss off if you're just here to poke me with a stick.
I pre-ordered and tried the demo this morning. I thought it was fun and crude, which is about what I'd expect from Duke Nukem. For all of you saying the graphics look old, I would agree, but it is because they are old. This game was finished by a skeleton crew of people from 3D Realms and I doubt they wanted to start over with a new engine again. Personally, I'd rather have a chance to play the game instead of having it tossed in a rubbish bin somewhere, even if it isn't the fanciest tech. The game will bring closure and nostalgia, which is the main reason I bought it .
