Well, just finished the demo. I honestly thought it was very underwhelming. I cannot understand the 2-weapon limit decision, and the extremely limited ammo. I'd expected more from the battle with the Cycloid Emperor.
OTOH, it being Steamworks-based means I probably will wait for the price to drop first before picking it up.
orcishgamer: I don't think your reasons are bad for being cautious. I certainly am not pre-ordering, for instance. But writing it off completely at this stage is shortsighted. Even if it ends up being average it could still be good fun down the road at some point.
I agree. It may end up being fun, who knows. The demo may just be a horrid representation of the final product. OTOH, it being Steamworks-based means I probably will wait for the price to drop first before picking it up.

It was the same demo I played at PAX. It was more mind blowing then because that was the first we'd heard of it and everyone was super excited for it.
Now that I've had time to let the shock and awe pass and have a second chance to play it. It was pretty horrible. I was expecting something on par with Serious Sam, but what I got felt like fear mechanics without the atmosphere.

I actually really enjoyed the demo. The little I saw was bristling with this infectious, humorous atmosphere. It's definitely a game out of time; at times I felt like I was playing an 8-year-old shooter, but it was a fantastic 8-year-old shooter. I will echo a comment I saw somewhere else; it felt like I was playing the first Half-Life.
Would I pay $60? Hell no. Would I pay $30-40? Yes indeedy. Therefore, I shall wait for a sale.

CymTyr: Haven't read through the whole thread, but I enjoyed the demo.
Sure, it's not going to be a perfect game, but at this point it doesn't have to be. The fact it's even being released is a miracle, you have to at least give them that.
This game for first and second gen fps fans would be like if Brian Fargo ever released Wasteland 2 for the rpg crowd, or a proper sequel to Bard's Tale. I know we have a lot of rpg fanatics on here, so that's why I used that as an example.
My only complaint with the demo is that my computer seemed to bog down once or twice playing through it, which strangely enough also happens when I play Borderlands.... *rubs chin ponderously*
No seriously, if you guys don't like the demo that's cool, for me it was everything I expected and more, though.

I should also add that I have almost no experience with the Duke character; my interest was piqued because of his legendary status and his awesome voice/appearance. Seriously, we need more characters that look like that.

The demo is...incredibly underwhelming and disappointing, to say the least. I really hope that the rest of the game is better. Too early to say, though.

Judging from most people's responses, I can't say I'm surprised about the game. The trailers they've released really haven't impressed me. Props to Gearbox for taking over the project, but I've always known that nobody can do Duke like 3DRealms--lazy WoW-absorbed bastards or not.

3DR may have started Duke but they also ran it into the ground with multiple engine changes and long delays.

low rated
Instead you are disagreeing on everything that goes against your view of life, purely because you want to?
The demo was crap. It was lacklustre, felt more like an endless credit sequence and so over-played with innuendo that it felt like a wannabe Duke Nukem. Vagabond was adding to the discussion, he was adding the fact that he too yawned at such a tedious demo.
Deal with it.

A new gen FPS with sex and literally and metaphorically, dick jokes. When that was a novelty in the 90s, it was fun, because 1) I was a teenager and that's par for the course and 2) I couldn't name 47 porn sites off the top of my head. But the old games like this, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfeinstien 3D, etc. had these massive levels, with plenty of exploration and free roaming.
It really seems like you have to powerhouse your way through these levels at just a dead run, that there really is no incentive to get lost and go exploring at all, that instead of innovating gameplay and ideas for the industry to later rip off, they're the ones ripping off other games this time (I immediately thought Dead Space with the limb removal, and seriously going to two weapons only? Health regeneration?) and once you get done with it, there's no need to come back to it because, well, GTA IV and the rest of the games you can see elements from here did it better.
