A few weeks ago I started dabbling in online storage. This is because, I already had a google account via YouTube so I thought I would give Google Drive a try for work purposes. The 5GB of free storage is really good. However, I have found the upload speeds to be very slow.

I heard Dropbox is very good, I haven't tried it yet. The free storage is only 2GB there but is it best to go with that one? Which is the best out of the two? What about the installed software they both use?

If I can get a nice online storage solution, it would save me quite a lot of hassle considering I sometimes work on my netbook when I'm in work and when I'm home I do much the same work on my laptop. Therefore it would be nice to quickly and easily share files between the two.

Any other info on Dropbox, Google Drive or online storage in general would be appreciated aswell. :)

Dropbox works really well and is really popular. Personally, I like the drag and drop in-Windows-Explorer nature of it.

If its for backups then I can recommend SugarSync - in fact if anyone wants a specific recommendation I'd get some free storage ;)

5GB free plus old versions of files don't count. Also has some nice sharing features between accounts. Plus a "magic biefcase" where all you machines can mirror the content.

Been using it for a while now and its been solid.

I use Dropbox to backup text documents (projects I'm working on, mostly). It works very well for that purpose. I've never tried it for anything else.

There's no need to choose: use all of them. Free storage always come in handy.

I use Skydrive as a backup for my pictures (Microsoft used to offer 25 Gb of free storage, but that has been reduced to 5 Gb for new users).

I use Dropbox for my documents, to automatically upload pictures taken with my phone, and to share stuff with coworkers or friends.

I use SugarSync to sync save games folders, so I can pick up my netbook and resume playing where I left off with my main machine. (Unlike Dropbox, in SugarSync you can choose what folders you want to upload and keep in sync.) I also use it to back up and sync my work files.

All of them come in handy.

What about the syncing software Dropbox and others use? Is it simply a drag and drop folder you drop files into which then get auto uploaded?

The best ones are:

Dropbox - get free storage with various games they have. I'm up to 13 GB with bonuses and referrals.

MS Skydrive - 25 GB free

Box.com - 50 GB free, I think there's a promo right now for new users to get 25 GB free

Google Drive - not much space but still pretty good.

I like Wuala. Slick GUI with lots of features and fast uploads but you only receive 5GB for free. Dropbox, Skydrive and Google Drive are all good but uploads are usually low (at least for me, even with 10Mbps up) and I think Skydrive have some file size limitations.

One nice thing about Dropbox is that files can be any size. A lot services used to offer huge amounts of space but limited you to ~200MB files. Fortunately it looks like thing have gotten better recently.

I personally use Dropbox and it's all I need for my purposes.

I don't use Google Disk for one reason...the EULA, specifically this:

"When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content. The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones. This license continues even if you stop using our Services …"

If that's an issue you can easily encrypt you data then store it in Google Drive.
