Coelocanth: One thing I'll say about Origin is it has worked without issue for me. The store leaves a lot to be desired as far as ease of use and layout (and their sales are a bit of a joke), but the times when my internet connection has dropped hasn't been a problem. If I was playing an Origin-required game, Origin just automatically dropped into off-line mode without interrupting the game at all. I've had less issues with Origin than Steam. For what that's worth. :)
Running a client every time I want to play a game is not acceptable . I accepted installing the damn thing for Dead Space, but that doesn't require it every time I want to play it .

Wish more people would do what I did . Maybe these vermin at EA would finally go bankrupt, and the rights to those games would go to someone who knew what to do with them...

No worries, I'm not making any kind of judgment call on this. Just thought I'd point out that Origin isn't as bad as most people would like to make it seem, if that was your worry. But I completely understand your stance. I'm somewhat similar in view in that if a game requires a client in order to run it, I won't pay more than a certain amount for it (5 bucks is generally my limit). My view is if the publishers want to tie the game to a client, then they've just killed most of the intrinsic value of the game to me.

Or someone with a lot of money, like Bethesda.

Licurg: C&C collection is on sale on GG :

Do I just have to run their shitty client during download/instalation, and essentially DRM-free afterwards ? I only care about Red Alert 2 + Expansion, Renegade and Generals + Expansion .
Not available in Germany. Probably because Generals is banned here. The reason was back then that the scenario was too realistic. Only game I know that got a USK 16 and still banned. Two weeks later the legal system about "youth protection" was changed and a ban with USK 16 would have been impossible.

No need to do anything illegal for the first 3 games (C&C, Red Alert & Tiberian Sun). They are still up on Fileplanet, and EA don't seem to be interested in removing them, so I guess they are still fair game.

Not any more it isn't.

That was a controversial case though, and very politicised. I can certainly imagine that the BPjM wasn't keen to have its political neutrality questioned, which is why I suspect there was little resistance to the blacklisting being lifted.

The problem is that the first C&C, Red Alert and Tiberian Sun were censored, and the USK 16 certificate was awarded for the censored versions only. Neither game is blacklisted in its uncensored form, they are simply unrated, and I imagine EA just can't be bothered to get it rerated.

If they were rerated, C&C 1 and Tiberian Sun would no doubt breeze though with USK 16. Red Alert 1 is less clear-cut due to the swastikas.

Funnily enough, I downloaded C&C 2 (Tiberian Sun) with addon (it is freeware) shortly ago, and it still is very nice. So I would have liked to have the full series at one central place instead of having all (except 4) spread out on different places, some early games up to RA2 even on CD.
Unbelievable! I am totally shocked. Really? DRM on coffee? Come on. If the DRM on coffee thing comes true, I think i'll break that DRM in coffee like I did that DRM removal for movies.
