Dr.M. has stolen our marketing plans, taken our game masters, absconded with our video trailers, and pilfered our contracts! Coala suggests that we should track down the evil Dr., but how in the world can we do that? We know that he has our "Get HUGE" formula, and we suspect that Dr. M. is going to the headquarters of our next publisher--and we know it's one of the five we've already mentioned in our CDP Days Conference this Spring. One of our clever developer guys pointed out that the only way that Dr. M. could have found GOG's secret headquarters (as opposed to our regular, non-secret one) would be to have put a tracking device somewhere. We've tracked Dr. M's tracker (ha! Take that, evil!) and we're plotting his location on a world map with each of our possible upcoming publishers' locations in them. Keep tuned for more updates as we triangulate on the signal and try to track down...the DASTARDLY DR. M.!

the mysterious Dr. M. made his appearance was way back in September, when we re-launched and moved the service out from the beta. Now, with the big announcement quickly approaching, it seems that Dr. M. has come out of the shadow once again. What's he up to this time? Find out more in the tale of great horror, entitled "Dr. M. & The Dastardly Doom". What horrors await? What grim future is coming to GOG.com?

We'll be posting the next pages of the comic in the next days so stay tuned to this news post as the story will reveal more info on Dr. M. and the secret briefcase!

hulksjedi: Why'd you insulted me? I haven't done anything to you. I haven't following this as close as I wanted to, missed that piece of info that's all. No need to insult someone like that just for free.

You're the kind of guy who says that online but you WOULD NEVER come out like that in real life.

Have some respect for people and for yourself mate. No need to come out strong like you did. We're all gamers here.

Longcat: Heh, I didn't mean to insult anyone....I respect those who earn my respect, and so should you.
What? what's wrong with you pla! OMG! you think that by insulting me you just earned my respect?

HA HA HA HA!

Sad mate. Really sad.

Is that your moral code, uh? insult someone and earn respect?

And what, you're trying me to live up to your moral code now? you pretend I respect you because you insulted me.

No no no no, sorry, apparently you didn't. Because you never meant to insult me. That's right. You aren't even man enough to say I'm sorry.

Your logic is flawed. People won't respect you for being a jerk, people will just ignore you.

I just came here and though I could add something to the discussion and first thing I got is an insult. I know 99% of the users here aren't like that. But you aren't making me think being at GOG community is that good either.

Really. Nice way to take care of the community guys.

One post and I am called retarded.

Thanks TaliaKiranaLurker for letting me know about the grayed out thing in a nice way. Now that's a way to answer to someone. That's a good community member.

That's what I respect.
We so excited, we so excited, we gonna have a huge game pack release tonight!
Oh, wait... This not even Friday.
I'm betting it's Microsoft today. It's something about how they wrote "Get HUGE" that made me think of Big Huge Games and Microsoft. maybe we'll be playing Age of Empires before the evening is through?

SLP2000: I refuse to install Steam, and I know there are many people here who also refuse to do it.

WhiteElk: x2!!!

At this time, GOG is the ONLY digital distribution I will use. I once used Impulse, but they sold us out to gamestoppers. So GOG is the one and only place for me to get games online. I passed on Civ5 (my favorite game franchise of all time) simply because it required steam.
I don't have a modern enough system to play the latest games, that coupled with my insistence of not paying more than $10 for game purchases makes GOG my only source of digital gaming goodness.
iTunes < stuff I haven't tried < Impulse < Steam = GoG <Getting it for Free

IMO.

Its only this way because GoG just improved the downloader and Steam automatically patches games (which is good and bad).

Damn, I just get back from dinner and its one hour left.

Seconded. Having to log to the client each time is a real pain (not to mention the so-called "offline mode"). That's why I can't stand Steam.

I just have a few to say about that:

Holiday sales
Weekend sales
Middle of the week sales
Daily sales

On Steam, I routinely pay anywhere between $3.50 and $8.50 for games released between 08-10 (most recently Splinter Cell: Conviction for $8 (I know, I got fleeced for the Digital "Deluxe" version)). But, for consistently <$10 games, GoG is the only place I know of.

EDIT:

Personally, for any digital distribution platform (games and otherwise)

Zune > GoG > Steam = D2D = Impulse = EADM

SLP2000: Plus, most of guys who have Steam and GOG prefer to buy here.
I realize that there's little point in getting involved in this discussion, but... I use both, and I use them for different reasons.

Gog does a lot of things well. The features that I like about Gog are that they do update these games to work on modern systems, and that I can be reasonably confident that I can just install it and go (ie, they package their updates into their downloads among other things). If it's an older game, yes, GOG is definitely the first place I'd go.

But it's not necessarily the first place I'd go for newer games. Why, you ask? Well, Steam has the seamless, automated patching of games perfected. As a gamer with a number of older titles, it's not uncommon to have to apply 5 or more patches sequentially in a row to get things running properly, and that's simply not fun when you've got a bunch of older games to reinstall. It has friends lists which I can use to join friends in-game in one or 2 clicks, server browsers, built in VOIP, achievements and a lot of other features that are well thought out and work very well. Many of these features are very handy for multiplayer online gamers such as myself.

I can understand your reservations re Steam. But, just to say - they got where they are today at least partly because they offered a superior product to their competition of the time. It's a different product than Gog offers, and I like gog too for its lack of DRM and its support of classic titles - but I'm not going to stop visiting both.

Here's one final thought, and a transparent attempt to change the topic: looking to the future, we're running out of IPv4 addresses very soon now. I haven't even heard of a single game that incorporates IPv6 networking yet; when are gaming developers going to be starting to develop games that work in IPv6? Maybe there's work being done on this already, I don't know... but I haven't heard much to date.

Get out.

SLP2000: I'm sure their user base is much bigger, I'd guess it's bigger than 20 times, but how many of those guys buy old game?

I'd say GOG has more users who buy old games (well, all of them do).
avatar
Taleroth: And I'd wager that the majority of people on GOG are also on Steam. So it's unlikely for GOG to have more people who purchase old games, since they share.
I thought GOG was kind of a refugee for people who refuse to jump through the hoop of DRM, I wouldn't be so sure that the majority of GOG users (but certainly many) have a Steam account too.

Well, now that I think of it, I do have one, :D I only have Deus Ex in it, but I have one.
avatar
Taleroth: That'd be a important point if something were to be released on both platforms. I mean, I'm with you on that, but my copy of LOOM is on Steam for an obvious reason.
I could agree with you, but I have proof that I'm right.

Take a look at Atari - their games are here. They are on Steam, but their old games are not.
Someone could think it's GOG exclusive, but their games are on GamersGate.

Activision - their old games are on GOG but on Steam they released only King's Quest and Space Quest collection. Same for Ubisoft (there are no HoMM games under part 5)

Baldur's Gate (and other D&D games) - first released on GOG, much later on other DD sites (not everywhere I think)

If you were right, those publishers would go straight to Steam.

But somehow they come here, and sometimes they don't even bother to release games on Steam.

LucasArts is the only big publisher who released their old games on Steam, not here.

And LucasArts will have to join GOG to sell me my copy of Loom, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken, Indiana Jones, KOTOR 1 + 2, Full Throttle, Monkey Island series Grim Fandango, etc.

Maybe a minority, but our $$$ is still something they don't have.

I use Steam and GOG for all my DL/Direct games.

I use Amazon, and sometimes Best Buy for my 'Off the Shelf" boxed games.
I'm rather hoping it'll be an announcement with every publisher mentioned and not just one.

Taleroth: Get out.
You do realize GoG doesn't sell videos or hand out unlimited (DRM-enabled, admittedly) music, right? So, I'll be staying right where I am, thank you very much.
