Hi everyone, I just downloaded a few gems the other day for the first time from GOG and it went smooth as silk. My problem is that I have bought a few games from Gamersgate and the GOG Downloader now acts like the default loader. Three of the title that I bought on GG were titles carried here so I guess the loader didn't have an issue installing the games, but when I tried to install a game that is not in the GOG catalog, the installation fails.

Well, I figured, NP. I will just manually install the game. No go, GOG Downloader still pops up. So, I deleted the .exe file for the GOG Downloader. No Go, same result! I am getting frustrated with this. How did this small program take over ALL my downloads and why can't I get rid of it?!?

I have sent a request through customer support, but they have a post stating that due to high volume it could be a while before they can get back to me, let alone help with my issue. So I am asking all of you for help! Any direction is GREATLY appreciated.

(Note: I am not computer illiterate for the most part, so I can work with most instruction. Thanks)
Could you explain what exactly you're doing in which program? There are several possibilities, and it's hard to help if I don't know the circumstances. If the problem happens in the browser, then it would also be good to know which one you're using.

When I download Icewind Dale 2 from GamersGate, Internet Explorer (IE9) is what is being used to download and save the file to the computer. When I go to install the file onto the computer the GOG Downloader loads up and tries to install the game. I am using Win 7 (64) as my operating system.

Gamersgate uses the same installer as GOG; you get identical files from 2 sites. Publisher of the game supplied those files fpr Gamersgate.
Just let it install.

Thanks for the reply. When I try to let it install it fails giving me an error message:

"We are sorry, installation failed...

An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory:

C:\Games\RPG\Icewind Dale II\Config.exe

MoveFile failed; code 5.

Access denied"

I also get the same message if I let the installation go to the default directory( with the default directory listed as the destination directory)
Are you using windows vista/7? I am still on xp but I vaguely remember something about UAC about this access denied errors. Try to install out of C maybe; don't know really.

sorry if you've already tried it, but have you right clicked and clicked run as administrator?
The GamersGate Game Tutor currently has a thread about similar problems. Apparently, temporarily switching off their antivirus solved those for some people.

Good suggestion, but I had already given that a shot to no avail.

BINGO! This did the trick. It amazes me sometimes how something that is supposed to be helpful can hinder you in other areas!

Thanks to everyone for there help and suggestions. Very much appreciated. Merry Christmas!

Try using a registry cleaner like CCleaner. Now that you've removed GOG downloader, CCleaner should pick up on all the registry entries related to it and propose you delete them. Which I recommend you do.

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
It's free.

Just click the Registry button on the left then click Scan for Issues down the bottom.

I'm glad that it worked. :) Merry Christmas. :)

fmonster: BINGO!
Glad to hear it.

If you want to avoid the hassle of switching off your AV every time you try and install something I'd still recommend taking a look at your registry with CCleaner.

why would the registry have anything to do with his antivirus thinking that the gog installer was bad?

Not that. The fact that installers from elsewhere are being associated with the GOG downloader. Removing those associations should remove the problem.

If his AV is thinking that all installers are bad anyway then it's time to ditch that too.

Installer from elsewhere is NOT being associated with GOG downloader; Gamersgate installer is the same as GOG downloader; publisher for the game provivded the same package to both sides. When the installer pops up with GOG logo on it he thought it was being associated with GOG downloader.
