StingingVelvet: Well, true, but the trick is insanely easy to do.
avatar
Stuff: It is indeed but . . . I rarely install games when I download them. I often buy several games at one time as well. I would have to remember to do the "trick" when I do an install (I have GOG games I bought 2 yrs ago without installing). A hassle that is not worth my time since it is not an issue with my GOG purchases.

Not debating the merits of it, but just for information you only need to launch the setup process, then copy the file folder somewhere, then cancel the setup process. You don't really have to install anything.

Thanks, I was aware of that from other posts (I don't have a GG account but depend on GOG community for info on other sites). I doubt I will ever play through my backlog . . . even if I stopped buying games today. That is one less step I will need to remember years from now or at download. If they remove the need to do that . . . I will probably open a GG account.
Debating is good . . . I have learned much from our community discussions . . . =)
Edit: I think GG will eliminate that work-around BEFORE they remove the need for it to be used.
Back on topic - after browsing DotEmu's catalog I only found one game that I was interested in. I would also see an increase in the prices I pay for games when dealing with DotEmu.

I'm tempted to buy some games from dotemu as they have little chance to be released on gog in the near future. These in the first place:

- Vampire - The Masquerade Bloodlines
- Loki

What was your experience so far with dotemu? How their releases compare with gog releases? Do they meet the same level of quality that gog accustomed us with?

And a more to the point question, is VTMB release on dotemu ok? Did anyone tested it?

I know that at a first look it might be better to ask this on dotemu forums but I want to hear opinions from users that can make a comparison between gog and dotemu releases. Plus gog forums seem a lot more animated.

VTMB is very much a YMMV game. It's bug ridden and unfinished and I doubt the dotEmu release fixed that. That said there is a community patch. A rather extensive one that makes the game an absolute joy to play. But if the game doesn't work for you then it doesn't work and no community patch is going to fix that.

DotEmu are pretty similar to GOG in a lot of ways. They're trustworthy enough. But like I said I cannot 100% guarantee that you'll get your copy of Bloodlines working.

I'd say it's worth taking a chance on as it's a fantastic game.
recently they also released the great Soulbringer......
damn, what the heck is GOG waiting for?!...

I have purchased on Dotemu a few times and every time it was a smooth transaction. If a game is on GOG I would prefer to get it here for the extras and to support the site, but Dotemu is just fine.

You don't have to request serials from support there - they are on your downloads page. The custom launcher they made for Silmarils collection is hot.
However they can go a little crazy when packing stuff together. Most often a larger installer itself has to be unpacked, so make sure you've got extra space on HDD.
Dotemu has a lot of titles that GOG does not

So let's hope GOG steps it up in terms of new releases

Roman5: Dotemu has a lot of titles that GOG does not
And vice versa. Actually, according to their catalogue, DotEmu has 168 titles available, while GOG has 326, according to the main page (I don't know if this means titles, or individual games, but GOG's catalogue is still a lot bigger than DotEmu's). Plus if you check some of the DotEmu titles, there are repetitions, e.g. UFO Afterlight, UFO Aftermath, UFO Aftershock and UFO Trilogy (the three games as 1 title).

I do not trust them for there eyes are shifty and they smell of trolls...

OK i rescind that statement i just found out they have Silverfall and Loki ^_^

As of this day GOG first then if they dont have it DotEMU ^_^ gotta support drm free where ever it is but, "GOG is Family"... they are always #1

I love GOG with all my heart but honestly, DotEmu ain't bad at all. When they have sales, their prices can sometimes top GOG's. I just bought Syberia 1 and 2 off them for a total of $6. The best price I have seen on GOG this year was $3.99 each.
Yeah, competition is nice... but DotEmu has regional pricing. It makes 6€ for both games, 7.8$. It has the advantage however that it states more clearly the version of their package as well as languages... and French is often included.
I bought two games from their current 14-day promo, but apart from these, there are less than five games in their catalogue that I'm interested in and that I can't get from GOG. So I doubt I'll spend a lot of money there. But I agree with others that competition is good, and the two purchases I made worked just fine.

It seems some big changes are coming to Dotemu to make the rivalry bigger between GOG and Dotemu.
There is already a new Logo in use on their twitter and Facebook, and it will be on the new and improved website. (website changes coming)

------------------------------------------------------------------
I quote from their support forum:

Thanks for your support.
For your information, we are working on a new version of the website, with the new logo you can see on our Facebook or Twitter page
We take notes about all your remarks guys!

Also al quote from an interview given with Dotemu seems to say big changes are coming to Dotemu!

I Quote from this interview:
CGM: Where do you see the service expanding as time goes on? Do you have any plans for 2012?
XL: Hehe good question. We have a secret plan. We will do a major announcement in March/April.
RT: Many great upcoming projects, on mobile and PC.
