Point taken, but IIRC the Super Pack was being offered at 50% off quite frequently.

I don't think most people will feel compelled to get the upgrade anyway. $30 is asking far too much for the small amount of new content.

Fenixp: This. Steam servers are still hosting the game anyway, so what would be the harm.
I can only think of some support issues. Maybe the original will be W8 incompatible? Apart from that I have no freaking clue. Didn't they also offer a discount for those that have D3 already?

Fenixp: What I'm angry about is that by this nice step they've pretty much cut everyone from Doom 3 modding scene which was and still is quite active and has produced a few nice pieces that I can heartily recommend.

You may not care about mods, that is fine, but I have bought original Half-Life in ... 2007 or so just so I can get to playing mods. I bought it off Steam, by the way. If Valve released Half-Life Source and pulled the original with it, I would have never played those fantastic modifications.

So yeah, it's very nice of them to cut future buyers from that just so they get more profit. The fact that BFG edition doesn't actually enhance anything doesn't help either.
But you still have your copy and you can still enjoy modding it (presumably?). Future buyers can decide for themselves whether the purchase price of BFG is worth it without the possibility of modding, So their out to make a quick buck, who isn't?

PS is the forum reply notification thing flaky for anyone else lately.

I highly doubt so. iD's known for good programming, and the game's using DX 9 which is working very well under W8, not to mention Doom 3 itself runs flawlessly under W7.

'Where's the harm' argument, I get it. I'll ask the other way around: Where's the harm in leaving original buyable in store or bundling it with BFG edition, so people actually can enjoy modding in the future and so those who still are working on Doom 3 modding aren't royally screwed because their fanbase is just not going to expand?

I think that that's what people are angry about, Bethseda went out of their way to make Doom 3 unavailible, while they could have just done nothing and everyone would be happy.

Magmarock: Oh well if you want a slow pace FPS I'd suggest Crysis, I didn't find the shooting in Doom 3 particularly good. The guns lacked punch and the monsters just sort of fell over and disappeared... lame.

Fenixp: I've played Crysis and Far Cry and while good games, both are not exactly my cup of tea, and are quite a bit different so ... Yeah, that was not such a good suggestion. I genuinely do enjoy Doom 3 more than both of those. And if you think that guns in Doom 3 lacked puch, you were doing something wrong. When used correctly in correct situation, every weapon in Doom 3 is very capable of dealing with what's it been designed for within a few seconds.
When I say that lacked punch I meant they weren't satisfying to use. I'm not talking about damage, but how rather how loud and flashy they are.

Fenixp: Well I did approach Doom 3 with general mindset of 'It'll be shit.' I do that a lot. I end up being pleasantly surprised a lot :-P

That attitude is ludicrous. It can be demonstrated that Fallout 3 is *THE* Fallout game. Just because there were a few of you sitting in your holes playing Fallout 1 and 2, and gloating over how the poor unwashed masses were excluded from your little secret world doesn't mean that FO3 is inferior.

Fallout 3 is without a doubt one of the top ten videogames of all time, neither of the first two are.

Now, I know you are going to come back and argue some sort of "not the same, cash grab, travesty, etc, etc", but all of that is hogwash, and the sales numbers support it. What has sold more, Fallout 3, or the other two?

You're seriously asking that question? How precisely does the original Fallout sellout? Or FO2 which was the same basic formula on a somewhat larger scale with more options?

FO3 deviated from the original formula quite a bit, it was a fine game and GOTY worthy, but it's certainly not as good of a game as FO, FO2 or FO:NV were. It's less of a sellout than FO:T was, but that's not really saying much.

Top 10 games of all time? Seriously? It did deserve the GOTY designation for the year it was released, but it's hardly a top ten nominee.

Don't get me wrong, I loved FO3, but it pales in comparison to FO:NV and likely to FO4 and Wasteland 2 when they come out. FO3 just doesn't have the sort of gravitas that a truly great RPG ought to have, I never got the feeling of ambivalence about decisions that FO:NV gave me, where I had to make a really hard decision. I think probably the only place where it was even close was that last part of the main quest, and even that was relatively minor and the ending encouraged one to do something that was really stupid.

Ah yes, and appealing to popularity, it's not like that's a logical fallacy...

I thought iD was supposed to be still largely calling their own shots...

But yeah, this sounds a lot more like a Bethesda move, it's rather insulting that they're only giving 30% off to those of us that already own the game. And even then it's only for a limited time.

To be honest i think this was due to technical limitations. The game was a resource-hog when it came out, if the bodies didn't disappear it would be worse. This is just a hypothesis, though.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are all but the same game, with minor tonal differences.

And if we are not going to go by sales, we need to go by critical unbiased opinion, which is difficult to set up procedurally. So we would need a set of gamers who have not played any of the Fallout games before, all pre-screened to ensure they are not being influenced by online articles, popular opinion, etc. We then ask them to play Fallout 1,2,3 back to back, and rank them.

Do you honestly believe that more than 30% of them would rank 1 or 2 higher than 3? If you do, and you are willing to put enough money up, I am willing to challenge your assertion, as I cannot imagine anyone unblinded by nostalgia preferring the original two fallout games to the masterpiece that is Fallout 3.


In addition, anyone that thought that Bethesda was buying ID Software to let them soldier on is delusional. Of course they are going to min/max their assets.

Do I count as unblinded by nostalgia? I only played the first Fallout a few years ago when my dad ended up with a copy of the compilation pack (1, 2, and Tactics). I finished Fallout 1, didn't like Fallout 2, liked but never finished Tactics, got and loved New Vegas and got and enjoyed 3. If so, let me say, I preferred 1 to 3, and New Vegas over 1. I preferred 3 to 2.

But then again, I'm not quite certain how fighting over the Fallout series related to Bethesda pulling Doom 3 from Steam.
