bansama: Once I put Steam back in online mode (probably within the next 20 hours or so -- once Borderlands 2 finally unlocks) I'll fire up both standard Doom 3 and BFG, and take screenshots at identical locations for both with mods in standard Doom 3 disabled.
That'd be great, seems like 50/50 people say they're worse or the same.
Doom 3 (with custom resolution of 1920 x 1080 (full screen res. for my monitor):

Doom 3 BFG (same resolution):

Doom 3 is set to ultra graphics with an anti-alias of x4 as that's the highest one that BFG offers by default.

I'll take a few more later, but I don't have saves for Doom 3 so I'll have to play through that one in tandem.

I'm getting errors for both links.

You need to manually add the " / " at the end of the URL as the GOG forum stupidly doesn't add it to links.
Is there any way to change the controls on Doom 1 and 2?

I'm not playing this with mouse+keyboard and I can't strafe with alt.....
I never could bring myself to like Doom 3. I tried, I really tried but still failed.

Usually I can play through even the most boring FPS's just for the sake of shooting stuff, but Doom 3 was such dissapointing and plain boring game that I couldnt bring myself to finish it.

-Maybe- if it was all modded up? But I doubt it.

Did you try Quake 4? I thought Doom 3 was passable until I played Q4. Everything D3 did wrong it terms of monotony and bad lighting Q4 fixed. Also there is a little more gun play ie: strategy, not just full on blasting stuff as it burst up out of the floor.

Still, Doom is a great movie, for simple minded people like me anyway:)

I did play through Q4 - wasnt exactly nobel example of a game - but the guns got enough ooomph and the surroundings change atleast a bit. Doom 3 was just one damn dark corridor after another, with a bit of hell mixed in here and threre + lousy guns.

Yeah, Q4 was definitely a fun no-brain shooter.

Play with zDoom, not whatever weird emulator they are using.

If they're using DosBox with some keymap which breaks ALT (I found this can happen with Gog's Tomb Raider release which messes up my Ctrl key across windows) Ctrl+f1 should still allow the mapper then.

As for the images above, Apart from lighting being darker on the original and having aspect ratio issues I don't see that big a difference. Then again, I don't know what to expect, games have rather faltered graphics wise for a while. Just started playing Skyrim last week. Installed the high resolution texture pack. And still wandering through a cave I found myself thinking "This looks just like doom 3, right down to the rather too shiny lighting"

And also I agree on Quake 4. I quite liked it and found it more playable than Doom 3. It's what got me to pick Quake 1 and 2 back up.

Skyrim looks a hell of a lot better than Doom 3, but that aside I think Skyrim, Crysis and the lot have reached the point of diminishing returns on graphics. I don't see any reason for them to ever look better, the games are intensely immersive and beautiful as it is and cost too much to make already for most to be profitable.

They should focus on improving animation quality and AI over improving anything else IMHO.

IMO despite better looking games coming soon, Far Cry 1 still looks amazing, because it is all in the color and the vegetation, its like no matter how old it gets, its still timeless.

Yeah, color seems to have been something a lot of games lost the last 10 years.

Actually, I'm playing it with a gamepad right now, and that is surprisingly awesome.
