HiroshiMishima: However, I see no point in buying the BFG edition for around $30. The whole censorship issue leaves me very dissatisfied, plus I don't see the point in paying so much for a digital copy of the game when some of the extras I already own. Now, if they had a really nice sale on Doom 3 + Expansion, I'd consider looking into it. ..actually, thinking about it, I wonder if my cousin has a copy of that somewhere.
Just get a used disk (with CD key) and install the patches. They sold a billion copies less than 10 years ago so it should be really cheap. Save the data paks for when the good source ports arrive.

The patched game doesn't require a disc in your optical drive so it's better than a binary tied to Steam anyway.

korell: I'm just wondering if there are any particularly recommended source ports for these games. The Doom games, Heretic and Hexen.
avatar
zambrey: Well, I really liked Doomsday engine. It can run Doom, Heretic/Hexen and offsprings. You can even load 3d models. Great stuff.
GZDoom runs them all too, never had a problem with it.
avatar
mrcrispy83: I mainly just want to play doom 1 and 2. :(
avatar
bevinator: You're much better off using a source port for the early games. Just download ZDoom or one of the other ports (they're all free). At that point, the only thing you'll need are the original doom.wad and doom2.wad files, which can be acquired from a variety of sources. *cough* Most of the ports can also run Heretic, Hexen, and even Strife, so you can get compatibility and improved play out of those games too.
I know, but I still would like to have a legal copy in some form some day for moral reasons.

and well it's hard to explain. but like when you pirate something, there's no barrier for entry, it's not any harder to pirate one game than it is to pirate a thousand games. But then you'd just have a thousand games squatting unplayed on your hard drive. there's no motivation to actually sit down and play them, no pressing desire to play them to get your money's worth out of them

like I pirated Duke 3d and Blood a while back, but I never actually got around to playing them until I got legal copies from GOG.

Red_Avatar: You do realise they had to release this game for Xbox as well, right? The Xbox seriously struggled with Doom 3 and still looked horrible but my bet is that they didn't want the Xbox and PC versions to play too differently.
I'm quite sure that they didn't develop the PC version of Doom 3 with the specs of the Xbox in mind. The Xbox port was developed by a third party and released eight months after the PC version. And I don't remember reading a single word about an Xbox version until after the PC release.

F4LL0UT: . Although actually I always felt that Doom 3 had a lot in common with the Quake 2 campaign.
avatar
Snickersnack: That makes sense. They both had the same lead designer, Tim Willits.
Yeah, what doesn't make sense is that people complained about Doom 3 having almost nothing in common with previous games by id Soft. Sure, you couldn't play Doom 3 in the lightning fast hardcore manner that some people did in Quake 2 but I think for the average player it was quite a similar experience.

The biggest novelty for me was the loss of strafe jumping and the introduction of sprint+stamina. It forced to me to learn how to move again. Otherwise Doom3 was full of id'isms.

I think many critics just wanted a modern remake of Doom 1 the game, not Doom 1 the scenario. Doom 1 & Doom 3 are very different games.

Doom 3 has been taken down from Impulse too now, however you can still find Final Doom there for $9.99. Doom 2 is absent but I don't think they ever put it on Impulse, must have pulled an LA.
Since I have Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil, Doom 1, Doom 2, Master Levels of Doom II and Final Doom all via Steam, I think I'll wait until it's cheap during one of Steam's holiday sales. Would have been nice if they would have released a free update or something to those of us who already have Doom 3 and RoE and Doom 1 and 2.
I'm just so glad I got this working properly. The game looks ... Beautiful.

I'm kind of afraid that would mean replacing Doom 3 and RoE in our catalogues, and I would really, really hate that. Nice graphics I can mod in, actually far superior to BFG edition. And I play a lod of mods for Doom 3, which would be rendered incompatible.

Is that Dentonmod?

It's Doom 3 HD compilation, actually.
Thanks. Looks really good, will try it out later.

HiroshiMishima: I loved the original DOOM games and like some others I have the DOOM Collectors Edition CD with Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II, and FInal DOOM. I'd love to try out Doom 3 even though I heard it wasn't great, just to see how it was for myself because in situations like this I don't always trust what others say or prefer to err on the side of disbelief. However, I see no point in buying the BFG edition for around $30. Doom 3 seems have been hit or miss for folks around here.
Personally, I really liked it. And I was practically raised on Doom II.

It's got a separate .exe file, so it might cause trouble with Steam release. Might, I have already cracked my copy.
I bought mine for $60 in August 2004 XD
