Huh, pirates? Where? Pirates are cool. And ninjas. And cyborgs. Are we talking about cyber-pirate ninjas here?
Now, back on topic. Wanna know what my biggest issue with modern games is? You can't always tell whether the game is any good or it's just the marketing team doing their job too well before you actually get a feel of the game. So after buying a couple of overadvertised pieces of... marketing art, let's call them, I rarely (as in "almost never") buy games on day one (two notable exceptions being Skyrim and Assassins of Kings). And don't even get me started on pre-orders.
Demos solved the problem partially but alas, not every single game has one. So, my guess is some people just had an issue with buying a pig in a poke (and a much less issue with copying a couple million bytes without the rightholders knowing).
Now we have youtube and a plethora of those let's players who are eager to show you the insides of the game, how it's actually played, whether it's all you expected it to be or less. Talked me out of buying some things already, those guys.
Yeah, I know that's not the case with all those who prefer "torrent editions" of games, but still.
