Have you ever gone to an event (music, social, doesn't matter)?
If so you may have seen all those people holding their phone up in the air to record.
They don't look, they watch the little screen. Its almost funny to think that they are living through this screen.
In the 80's there was a big discussion about a referendum in Germany. The people were arguing if the government should
know about how many people were living under the same roof or how big their place is....
LOL, now everything possible they post freely on FB or Twitter (or any other social site).
Nobody cares about the big scandal that the US dictatorship reads every mail (and more).

You probably can, but unless it comes with a mouse, full-size keyboard, and a foldaway 24-inch screen, it really doesn't stand a chance of replacing any PC, much less a productivity one.

I've actually had people complain because I would leave the house without my cell:

"I tried to call you, etc."

"What use is your phone if you don't carry it ?"

Even though I use my phone a lot for various tasks, I refuse to let it degrade my social life. Not always easy though.

Yes to this and to the OP, I find it highly annoying that people live vicariously through a glowing rectangle. Even physically present many people in today's society seem to be unable to interact with people directly, they have to have the buffer of a technological device whether it be handheld or no.

I've sometimes declined to take photos or videos of memorable events simply for the reason that I'd rather experience them first hand rather than looking through a viewfinder or a small LCD of what I could be looking at directly.

I didn't even get a mobile phone smart or otherwise at all till about 2 years ago, which caused some issues with my boss, as she didn't like the fact that until I arrived at the office I was 'off the clock' and if traffic caused a problem she wanted to know about it immediately, so much so that she would rather me pull off the highway (where ever and when ever that is possible in a traffic jam) find a payphone or bug some random person at some random location to call in an update, by which time I actually accomplished that to her satisfaction a few times I could have been pulling into work instead... just didn't understand the lack of logic there. And if a phone is *so* important the business could have bought one for me.

When I did get one it was under a family plan where it has minimal cost, no data plan, no texting and is used for family calls and emergencies and as little as possible for anything else.

I have done the reading/walking thing many times though with a book or ebook, takes some practice to stretch one's perceptions; but, even then I don't risk crossing a street or anything like that, just mark my place and pick it back up on the other side and certainly not done when there are others physically present to interact with.

I find myself doing it occasionally, but if someone asks me a question or starts up a conversation I will put it away. Which I do see the younger generations can hold conversations while texting their friends.

The social problem I have is with Facebook. I don't do Facebook, and family members assume that I read some comment out of the 600 they posted for that day. I miss email and IM and despise Facebook. Thankfully, family members will still use texting on occasion or I would be completely out of the loop and be hell bent on my complete anti-social life.

edit: Strange that texting is not a word, yet.

Popping onto a forum for a total hour a day is not a bad thing... so what's your point?!

I stare at my laptop screen all the time, my gf stares mostly at the Android tablet screen. Sometimes we both stare together at the 47" TV. Sometimes we ever stare at each others when we talk.

What amazes me are all these SheepBook type who can't operate a PC worth a crap but master very small handheld touch screens (with a sloppy one-touch interface) like they born with them in their hands.

Yes, I know what you mean. I can pull apart my pc and put back together in half an hour easy but I can barely type on my Galaxy S3 never mind do anything like game on it.
