As many people mentioned, there are indeed MMO and RTS games to be played (SW:TOR anyone?)
Many of these will be for PC though, which is great. I just wish console games took to the variety too. It sucks not really caring what will be announced at E3 events anymore, though this year seems to be holding quite a few goodies. :)

try researching or at least thinking before you post mindless drivel.
Guessing you don't make friends easily?

I don't see a lack of variety myself. In fact the indie scene has been busy producing games which defy genres for a while now.
This week I have been mostly playing: Tropico 3, Call of Pripyat, Dragon Age and UFO Aftershock.

List of my Steam games.
Pick any game or name any game on GoG, since I have over 50 games there's a fat chance I'll have it, and let's play.

Reminds me of this post:
http://robzacny.com/index.php/Index.php/2010/03/easy-there-tiger-thats-a-strategy-game/
Gamers today do seem a lot less interested in trying new genres, which is a shame. Variety is the spice of life, and I don't think there's a single genre that I haven't tried and enjoyed at some point in my gaming life. Yes, that includes hidden object games and football managers.
But! :-) There's the indie scene as well as many smaller (but not quite indie, perhaps) devs that thrive on the PC, and even on the consoles there are plenty of downloadable goodies of all kinds. So I actually think the situation is better now than it was a decade ago, were some genres were virtually dead (both the adventure games and the puzzle games have made a huge comeback, for instance). And GOG helps too.

No, he doesn't. He just says that you can blame the Xbox for the lack of variety. Given what sells on Xbox is predominantly action games, that's what most publishers are going to want to publish. There is also evidence of carbon copies outselling original titles by a margin.

and the xbox is to blame how exactly? don't think the xbox players want better games? don't blame them that there is a market (on pc) for shooters. it would be crazy not to tap that market.

FPS may have started life on the PC. Still to this day the PC is the best platform to play them on. But that doesn't change the fact that the market for them has predominantly migrated to the consoles. It's gone to the point where publishers feel they can exclude the PC entirely with no great loss in sales.
Agreed. But is it that big of a loss? And it seems contradictory to the general statement of hte openingpost, not? (does anyone play anything except <-> no one publishes it anymore)

Also remember that console controllers generally work better with action games than they do with more complex games. Game developers often say they've found ways to make RTS games (for instance) work on just as well consoles as they do on the PC, but it's never true. And just look at how Telltale have screwed up the controls for TOMI and Sam & Max Season 3 because they didn't want the controls to depend on the mouse (point & click).

I think the real problem is budget. Yes, I'm actually saying that the millions of [currency] that developers have at their disposal is actually problematic. They can't take so many risks anymore. If there's no clearly defined market for a game then publishers won't want to know. Which not only reigns developers in, but also means that for the most part, games are becoming increasingly bland and tried and tested. Which, again, leaves it all to the indie developers.
Is it a big loss? I'd say it's a big loss for gamers. For starters, this is why we won't be seeing a proper XCOM game again. It is why there has never been another Bullfrog or Looking Glass. It is what happened to Deus Ex. It is why Bioshock became a more straightforward shooter over the course of its production, rather than the spiritual continuation of System Shock that was intended. Let's not mention the annual sports game updates or pretty much anything Activision is doing these days.
