I have posted this issue in the SMAC forums, and as you can see, it's now been almost exactly a year and no responses.

If anyone here has the GOG version of SMAC and a Windows 7, 64 bit machine, could you please install the game, and try and play it, and see if you also have this issue???? I have now installed it on THREE different computers, with the same issue on all three. WTF??? Yet nothing in the sub-forums???? Does no one have this game on GOG??? Can I really be the only one having this issue ON THREE DIFFERENT MACHINES????

Could it be Nvidia related, since all three machines have Nvidia cards and are using the Nvidia sound hardware since they're running an HDMI wire from the Nvidia card to the receiver???

Give me some minutes to download and install the game and I'll get back to you.

One year? Why didn't you just contact tech support?
Is there a reason you did not contact support? ... ???????????? (ninja'd) If you had before the 30 days (assuming you bought the game post-policy) you might have gotten a refund.

There is this disclaimer but it's for ATI/AMD: "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri requires graphic card drivers version 13.4 or older."

LOL, because I have plenty of other games to play, so I would get started on another one, then forget about it. Then come back, try it again, post again, forget about it and play another game.... etc. etc.

If I don't get any info here, this time I will contact support. But thought I'd try here first.
I've got an Nvidia Windows 7 64bit combo myself, let me install and take a look.
This was my first purchase on GOG since I had heard so many great things about it.
I haven't played it in about 2 months but didn't remember any problems with it. Started it up now and verified sound is working great.
Windows 7 64 bit, Soundblaster sound card and ATI video.
The only time the sound goes away is when I alt-tab out of the game.
OK, I just tried it on my AMD/WIndows 7 64 PC and it had sound in the movies.

I launched the game and the intro has sound all the way through, I have not gotten to a wonder video yet. Would you like me to try and get to a wonder video? I don't use Nvidia for sound.

Okay, thank you. This should rule out it being a Win 7, 64 bit problem then. Must be an Nvidia problem I guess. I'm going to try running direct to speakers from the sound output instead of using the HDMI sound and see what happens then.

I get GREAT SOUND in the game. It's only the intro and in-game movies.
W7Pro64 and Nvidia, seems to work fine. I only watched until the babble about God, but I assume that's enough.

No, if the intro works, I'd bet the wonder video does to.

I'm leaning toward it being an Nvidia sound issue now.

THANKS FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK.

Do you think if it is an Nvidia sound issue that tech support will be able to help???
