OldFatGuy: No, if the intro works, I'd bet the wonder video does to.

I'm leaning toward it being an Nvidia sound issue now.

THANKS FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK.

Do you think if it is an Nvidia sound issue that tech support will be able to help???
They will probably have suggestions, but my guess is there might not be a fix because of the age of the game and Nvidia itself.
Do you use any "codec pack"? Maybe the same on the three computer?

Have you trie to update the sound card driver on any Pc?

Have you run the game on administrator acount or limited acount?

I have just give a try, on 2 different computer ,with very different hardware, one on win 7 the other on 8.1 ... no sound problem ...

OldFatGuy:
Your welcome and goodluck. I understand how annoying it can be when a game doesn't play right for you.
Let us know how the troubleshooting is going and hopefully the GOG collective here can continue to help out.

Edit: On a fun note, I have an hour to kill and you just got me started on a new game :).

Have the game installed, Win7 64 bit, works just fine .
Okay, when I hook my speakers directly up to the sound output on my computer, I get sound in the intro (and I'm guessing in the in-game movies). Win 7 64 bit so that had nothing to do with it.

But I use my speakers for my TV watching too, so I have a receive that I run an HDMI wire (which carries both sound and video) from my DirecTV box AND computer into. This way, I have surround sound while watching movies and playing games. And it works great, EXCEPT for this game.

And even in this game, I get great sound during the game itself, it's only the intro and movies.

I don't really care about the intro, but I was interested in getting sound from the movies because it seems the "interludes" must be some sort of significant part of "the story" (judging from what I'm reading on the SILENT screen LOL).

Yes, I've tried running in administrator. Yes, I have the latest Nvidia drivers. And no, I don't use any special sound codecs.

So it's an Nvidia sound issue, only affecting the intro and movies.

What do folks think??? Should I contact support here or just live with it (I'm not even going to attempt to contact Nvidia support over such an old game)

Be careful, or you'll look up and six hours have passed. I know this happens to me on the other CIV games all the time. (I'll just do one more turn...... five hours later I'm telling my self again, just one more turn..... )

I have this game and it runs without issues on my Win 7 64bit system, (Duel Core Pentium), with a GTX 450.

Do you have Direct X 09c runtime installed? (Most old games need it to run without issues).

And... have you tried installing the Nvidia Legacy driver?
(Only needed for Shadowgrounds Survivor thus far for me, but it might smooth out issues for other games...)

Hope that helps.

I'll give it a go then. AFTER the holidays. If I remember again (LOL). My first priority for tech support is to replace the missing games in my library....

I guess I'll just have to experience the interludes without sound.

Is there anything of significance that I would miss or does reading the on-screen text give me all the info I need???
okay, I just tested it on my machine

Windows 7 64 bit
Nvidia (with sound to HDMI TV)

It does plays the sound in the videos. Note I have K-Lite Codec Mega Pack installed, I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Well, now that blows away my theory.

Shit.

I wonder if it's something in my receiver??? Oh well, this is getting too much now.

THANK YOU very much for that info though. I guess I can rule out the Nvidia thing.

Lol, I know. But lunch with the whole family is going to make me stop. Still doesn't mean that when lunch is over I will want to make sure I finish one more turn.
Recently built this PC, with Win 7 Pro 64-bit, and nVidia GeForce GTX 660 (driver v344.75 rel 11-18-2014). I do not have any extra codec packs installed - just whatever came with Win 7 AND I think Stalker SGM might have added a codec.

Hadn't yet installed AC on this PC, so I did, with my GOG copy I DL'd way back on Jan 21, 2013 "setup_sid_meiers_alpha_centauri_2.0.2.23.exe".

It plays the sound in both intros - the one for AC and the one for Crossfire.

(Didn't try in-game itself as you were only checking for the intro).

HTH
I played GOG SMAC a lot on my Win7 64bit system with an ATI R7 Card. No problems at all.

Although I use my Logitech PC speakers for sound, so there is no component., like a receiver, in between.

If you have sound in the game but not in videos it's most likely a codec problem and not a sounddevice one.

Okay, then I think that explains it then, since djdarko above has basically the same setup I've got (including using the Nvidia sound via the HDMI cable) and he is using an installed codec.

Now, if only I knew what the heck "codecs" were, and how to install them..... LOL

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE HERE FOR RESPONDING.

It's amazing to me how nice you guys are despite me repeatedly being a real asshole. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I promise I'll learn more about this amazing machine I love to play on. (Unfortunately, I'll likely still be a real asshole, but hey, you can't expect miracles you know)
