I would not quite call GOG a way of life, but I do feel that it helps us relive our past in a rather meaningful way. GOG is not simply a place to acquire inexpensive titles, or games that are not burdened with DRM. GOG is a community where we can share our memories and relieved moments with one another. GOG is a place where we are able to to make that which is old, new again. GOG is introducing a new generation of gamers, to gaming of a distinct pedigree. These games are of an era before online multiplayer, before everything was about photo-realism. before games were overly cinematic. Here at GOG, gameplay is truly king, and in that I find that we are able to better see where we were and where we have come.
With that said, I have a new found appreciation for the games of old. They require reflex, dedication and above all else, patience. Games were centered around a cohesive set of themes and game elements. We spend hours engaged in these repetitive actions, but the titles are so well designed that every level seems fresh. It is a shame that the entire gaming community does not look to the past, in the same way that we do. Oh well. At least CD Project RED knows how to make a great game that plays like the games of old, but looks like the games of now.

It's great to see so many people getting so much good out of GOG! Yes, maybe calling it a way of life was a bit over-the-top, but now that I see many others who check GOG.com first thing in the morning (myself included) it's hard not to think that it's more that just another site we follow for updates and forum postings.
I agree that not only is the community full of great people, most of the stuff posted on these forums is mature and related to the topic at hand. Now that I think about it, this is probably the only forum I've ever participated in that doesn't feature excessive obscenity and swearing from time to time... Or maybe I've just been looking at the right topics? :D
Anyway, it's great to see people enjoying themselves! The first game that got me excited beyond gaming in a healthy way was Raptor: Call Of The Shadows, and as soon as the DotEmu promo came online I was sitting on my Macbook, buying Phase Shields and dodging bullets like I'm 7 years old again! It feels great! Most of my friends can't stand old graphics anymore, so they skip these classics entirely, that doesn't mean I don't annoy the heck out of them trying to push a classic or two their way every once in a while :)

Titanium: People tend to want to belong somewhere. Birds of a feather and all that. It's no surprise that you found refuge and shelter in a place, even on the net, where you feel like at home. So yeah, GOG has become a sort of community hall for me too, and I wholeheartedly support what the guys behind the scenes are doing for the good games of old.
Another +1 for this. Off-topic: by any chance, are you the same Wishbone that created the Dungeon Maker Alpha a few years back?nondeplumage

I come here every day, but I barely ever check the front page unless a forum news item mentions something.

I do the exact same thing. I'll usually check Tuesdays and Thursdays though, because it can be easy for a thread about GOG.com news can get buried under newly posted in threads really fast.

Deus_Ex: ...that GOG.com has become a way of life for you, instead of just another website you follow for game-related news? I recently noticed that not a day goes by when I don't check the front page for some exciting news or promos or scour the forums for some interesting topics. All these old games and the nostalgia surrounding them, combined with a loving community that never tires of talking about and playing these games reminds me of simpler times when I was just a young lad, with addition to scraping my knees climbing trees I also developed a healthy addiction for all kinds of games with my friends. Every day we'd go to whoever had the newest Full Versions of our favorite shareware games and game until we'd be hungry and tired from staring at those monitors for too many hours on end.
What I'm trying to ask is, do you ever feel like this when you visit GOG? Do you ever get back at least some of that awesome nostalgia when you play these games? That and being able to rave about these games in the forums with your friends just makes it that much more amazing!
Just my two cents. I'm off to play Raptor for another 2 hours!

Yes GOG.com truly is a great community of gamers. Not only is it a great place to come and share your opinion with other mature and truly nice ppl. Not once have I ever been totally flamed for a post or whatnot. It's great to see that there is at least one place on the internet that is not controlled by trolls, and annoying 12 year olds that can't stop swearing.
So I would just like to say Thank You to all of the great ppl and classic game fans that make up GOG, keep up the awesome work, you have my support!!!
