I just read an OP from a thread here, and didn't like their post, so I gave them -1. As I did so, I wondered whether I should say anything, or whether that would be rude. I decided not to post, but it got me thinking on how others feel on the issue.

People are very free with giving out +1s for game giveaways and saying so, but never seem to mention -1s. Would you want to know if somebody didn't like your post? Would you want to know why? Or would that just depress you and you'd wish they'd kept silent?

The -1 isn't a literal -1 to your actual numeric rep, so if 1 or even 2 people -1 me I'd never know. Now, if I had made a sincere post & got alot of -1s, it would read "Low Rated" and then I'd want to know why all the downreps (unless I already knew I was just being a belligerent butt-hole while making the post).

If i posted a topic and peeps didn't like it - I would want to know. IMHO to down rep some1 and not give them a reason, is like having a 1 sided conversation.

I have learnt from posting here, that sometimes it can be the way you "word" yourself, that can be mis-understood.

Finally, good open debate is a very good thing - I am not talking about flame baiting. Do i want to be down repped, no ....... but I also want to feel like I can have an opinion ...... if you don't agree with me, tell me ........ I may learn something :D

Would i like to know why? Yes and No.

Knowing why would be useful to make sure i don't make the same mistake again.

But if several people have a go and say bad things, it actually would start to get depressing.

If I "downvote" a post, it's because I think it's an obvious troll attempt or something similar, and is not worth replying to. Basically, I'm just trying to show others that it's best to ignore that post and move on.

If there's a post I don't like, but I think the person is being sincere, I might reply if I think it's worth arguing about, but I wont downvote right away. Not until I see how they handle the criticism anyway.

Well i'd like to know why I was being -1'd if it happened to me(So I could correct any possible misunderstandings in what I said & learn as best as I could from any mistakes I made in how/what I posted.), but i'd rather they tell me such via PM more than in the thread itself(So the thread would stay ontopic and not turn into a flame war/etc.).

It'd be nice to see if a post has been downvoted, but not necessarily who did so. I feel like the latter would be more trouble than it's worth.

Maybe a good alternative would be to have a small box pop up when someone -1's a post, where one can put in a small comment(or not) about why they did so(Which would then get sent to the poster's PM box as an anonymous PM.)?

There are many reasons to + or - a post and there have been several threads discussing how they should be used. It's tough. But what's important for me is that people are trying to figure this out because they want these forums to be a nice place to be. So, not an answer to the question, but people caring about this place makes me feel warm and fuzzy; like an angel vomiting a litter of baby kittens on me.
