anyways, i found gaming to take over - but then this was across the snes / psx / ps2 years, as a lot of trad games stagnated. ironically it was gaming and the movies (lotr for instance) that aided in saving them - these days i primarily play my collectable old GW games from the early 80s - partially for nostalgia

Card games can be pretty cool too. I'm not talking only about board games per se.

Card games are welcome too, but rather not collecting cards game (like MTG, it consumes too much money and I'm satisfied enough with MTG PC game on steam...)

Yeah, collectible card games can be a pain (and too expensive in the long run).

This set is the entire game. I haven't looked to see if it has any expansions.
I think it runs for $20, which isn't too bad when you look at how expensive some of the other games run.

This card game was actually my/our introduction to this style of gaming.

Yup, Arkham Horror. That is, until we get our asses beaten AGAIN, and make an unspoken promise not to play again for at least a month. After some time has passed, we take the game out again, excited as all hell, and lose once more. Repeat eternally.

Speaking of card games: Flux, Bang!, and Once Upon A Time are all great. :D I have a group I play roleplaying games with, but sometimes we also play boardgames. If you like Risk, Small World might be worth a look.

There's about five or six people who I play the game regularly with. Last time we played (about three weeks ago), we had a friend join in, who hadn't previously played with us, but bragged about how he has won all Arkham games he has ever played. What happened when he plays with us? We lost. Horribly. Not a chance. I remember laughing, when he said "we (as in our regular group) play the game strangely". Yup. We're the loser bunch.

Well, in all honesty, I have beaten the game a few times; once by myself with eight investigators, once with my gf with four, and a couple of times with my friends aboard (four to six investigators). However, given that we must've played the game at least 20 times throughout the years, that's not a really good record. Great game, nevertheless.

Neither one of use knew the game before and were/are learning it together. I think we've really only won the game one time. After the other time or two we've won, I happened to notice a rule that we'd forgotten that puts the win into question (by making the game even more brutal).

We play only one investigator each, making a total of two, so I know that's just asking to leave your blood and guts all over the game board.

I like board games, but I prefer abstract strategy games. They lack the themes, cards, and randomness of many board games. It's all about pure strategy. Some of my favorites include:

I play Pathfinder some when I can, but it's hard to find people in my area of FL to play with regularly though :(

If you are snowbound 6 months a year like me, let me suggest the Hoyle Board Games for PC. I've got the 2005 version though I'm not sure if some years are better than others. The games are great, the AI pretty descent, and it has good variety from smart (Chess) to profoundly stupid but fun (Battleship). My only complaint is that it cheats at Backgammon to the point that it will keep you from playing it, but most of the other stuff is great. Great Chinese Checkars, Codebreaker, some Yatzee clones and a bunch of other classics.

Yes. I do play Board-Games regularly. For example I like "RoboRalley", "Nobody is perfect" and "Wings of War".

Good card games would be: Bang!, "Zum roten Drachen" (don't know whether that exists in english) and of course Munchkin.

And from time to time I also play classical two-player board games like Chess or Go.
