korell: Came across my first lost souls in the game and couldn't figure out how to catch them. I tried the all keys and weapons cheat IDKFA to try out the new guns (hellish double rocket launcher and flame thrower thing). Couldn't see any ammo for them, though. Are they unlimited?
I believe you can only catch those little buggers if you have the power up that allows you to rip&tear enemies. The double rocket launcher thing is the gun you get from the revenant, and the flamethrower thing sounds like the Mancubus cannon. Their ammo weren't unlimited for me - got 10 ammo on each revenant/msncubus body. For some reason the cheat that i used also unlocked 3 other weapons: insanely powerful grenade laumcher, rail gun and a gun resembling the quake 3 bfg

yonazzan73: If so, you should really try Rise of the Triad: Dark War.

Yeah, it's not he best, but it sure is fun as hell. And some the weapons are so amazing.

So if you don't have it already, here's your chance: I pre-purchased the new game after watching the Q&A and I have this code to spare.

The original was pretty bad, i remember playing it back in the day and it didn't even compare to blake stone games...
I think i remember enjoying the terminator rampage even more xD

Concerning the title question, i really like oldschool shooters. I always install quake, quake II and gldoom on my new computers. From time to time i also play a game of duke nukem ^^

Also, mandatory pic:

This post made me feel old... when I read "mindless old school shooters" I didn't think of First Person Shooters... in fact, what came into mind was something like this.

I hated that game. Some asshole convinced me to buy that instead of Ring King.

You would have been better off with Ring King (King of Boxer, over here in PAL land), indeed. I wasn't stating I particularly enjoy vertical/horizontal-scrolling shooters, though I do like some of them; my point was that when someone my age thinks "shooter", it's one of those that springs to mind, not first person shooters.

[EDIT] Actually, I only played Ring King/King of Boxer on arcades. I know there are US and JP NES/Famicom versions, but I don't recall ever seeing it on sale in Europe. So the "King of Boxer" is probably just the arcade PAL version.

I bought Ring King a week later so I was okay. And I've derailed another.
Of course.

Yeah, IDKFA gave me the grenade launcher, the BFG10000 and the railgun, along with the Wolfenstein MP40. But the hellish rockets and flame thrower thing were definitely unlimited ammo. Maybe because I used the cheat to get them?

Yes, yes, and yes. I can't stress enough how well made Brutal Doom is. It keeps to the original theme and feel of Doom, and just makes EVERYTHING better. It even has Mortal Kombat style fatalities. The only thing that would make it perfect would be to have its own custom campaign levels along with some backstory/plot.

SCPM: It does look incredible, I'd love to see ports that polished-looking for games like Strife, Hexen, and Dark Forces.

korell: Well, if you mean with all the extras that Brutal Doom adds, that is a mod really, the port is either GZDoom or Zandronum and both seem to be good source ports. I know GZDoom will play Strife and Hexen, too, and as Zandronum is a fork of Zdoom then it too may be able to play both Strife and Hexen (I have both but haven't tried yet).

As for Dark Forces, I'm eagerly awaiting the XLEngine for DarkXL.
It turns out there is a Brutal Strife in the works! Why have I not heard of this before?!

The Brutal Doom FAQ does say he is going to work on other Brutal mods for Doom engine games, such as Hexen, Heretic and Strife.

I enjoyed Strife but I never finished it. Got all the Sigil pieces and think I only had to go off to find the crashed ship for the final boss fight, but I changed my PC and lost my saves, not that they would be compatible with the current ZDoom anyway (though I'm using Zandronum now, too).

Hahahah. Maybe its a good thing my computer is not powerful enough to run modern FPS.
