StingingVelvet: "Mindless?" Compared to Call of Duty Rise of the Triad is a fucking calculus test.
avatar
hedwards: I saw this post earlier and I'm still trying to comprehend how mindless CoD must be.
See if you can click on chrome links while holding down the W key. Your dexterity stat must be higher than 1.
I like mindless shooters that have a light dose of humour: Serious Sam/Duke Nukem. Even Painkiller as it was just ridiculous fun!

Don't forget Postal 2. Call me strange but I find pissing on a corpse causing someone to start vomiting and then cutting off their head with a shovel causing vomit to spew out of their neck to be funny but then that's why I'm heavily medicated.

korell: Wow, Brutal Doom looks amazing. I may just have to give that a try.

s23021536: Definitely worth it - it breaths considerable life into the game. Remember when playing to press F1 (i think)
to see all of the extra features, e.g. headshots, finishing moves and executions.
Just played first episode of Doom and the first two levels of Doom 2, using Brutal Doom in Zandronum. It was awesome fun. The shotgun feels amazing now. Zandronum may become my source port of choice (I'd been using GZDoom up to now).

I missed the F1 key, though, so will have to take a look at that.

SCPM: It does look incredible, I'd love to see ports that polished-looking for games like Strife, Hexen, and Dark Forces.
Well, if you mean with all the extras that Brutal Doom adds, that is a mod really, the port is either GZDoom or Zandronum and both seem to be good source ports. I know GZDoom will play Strife and Hexen, too, and as Zandronum is a fork of Zdoom then it too may be able to play both Strife and Hexen (I have both but haven't tried yet).

As for Dark Forces, I'm eagerly awaiting the XLEngine for DarkXL.

Or you could use the DoomsDay engine :-)

DarkXL is great, well, I only have the beta, so it crashes sometimes. Too bad XLEngine doesn`t take Blood yet.
I clicked the thread thinking "WTF!?" as when I was skimming the title, it red 'Do you like mindless school shooters?' in my mind.

Confession, so did I.

I used to use the Doomsday Engine, but it doesn't play Strife (which is why I moved over to GZDoom). All the flashy lighting effects and such I didn't mind losing out on. Also, Brutal Doom doesn't support Doomsday, but it does say there is a mod for similar flashy lighting effects that can be used with the GL graphics settings if your GPU is up to it.

Yeah, BloodXL will be very interesting when that comes out. I know there was work being done on it as there were screenshots and sprites and even a video of a Blood level walkaround (no monsters). Currently he seems to be focussing on DaggerXL for Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. But DarkXL (Dark Forces) and BloodXL (Blood) are the ones I'm most eagerly awaiting.

I pressed F1 but it just brought up the standard help screen that shows the default controls. Hmm.

lol, you right. Thanks for that. I recently downloaded Brutal Doom after seeing it in another post, and was planning on trying it on Doomsday.

But so far blood is working fine in higher resolution than 640x on win7x64, so I don`t mind waiting a little longer.

Weird, perhaps you've got a different version. I've been playing Brutal doom for a while now. Is ok though, you'll dscover most things by yourself. Most important: If you pick up a certain powerup (type of medic pack / weird thing that randomly drops on enemy kills) then killing a monster with your fists triggers a kill sync - 1/2 psooiblities per monster, and it heals you if you are <100 health. Also, if you use the weapons cheat then you get several extra weapons that i couldn't find in the single player. O yeah, and remember the alt-fire! O and, good luck with the cyberdemon, spider mastermind.... they been, uhm, buffed a bit ;)

JudasIscariot: Doom II was the primary reason I learned how to properly use a computer as getting it to run wasn't easy at the time :D.

Brutal DOOM? Yep, very aware. Very fun mod that breathes some new life into the game :D

I'm using version 18a, the latest at present (version 19 is due August 9th I think). I've seen some executions, but more than 2 for a single enemy type, I'm sure. Saw a head stomp, beating whilst kneeling over the enemy, and I'm sure it was something like a choke hold, all on the standard zombie soldier.

I've seen in a video, you can grab a lost soul (melee one maybe?) and throw it back at an enemy to set them on fire. Also, read in the FAQ you can use a chainsaw on a dead Mancubus or Revenant to cut out their weapons so that you can use them for yourself. :)

Hmmmm....I think it's ok in the gaming world. Not so good if it's in reality.

Postal 2 was good for novelty value and humour but for me, Apocalypse Weekend was awful. The expansion was more of a mindless shooter though.

Oh man I despise lost souls... and yeah, the Mancubus' cannon is actually quite useful - it also sets enemies on fire

Figured out the F1 help screen. When I use my Ultimate Doom WAD file, pressing F1 brings up the normal help screen with the default controls. But when I use my Doom 2 WAD file it brings up the Brutal Doom v016 help screen. But it is non-functional, no settings to change, just a display, so it doesn't matter.

Came across my first lost souls in the game and couldn't figure out how to catch them. I tried the all keys and weapons cheat IDKFA to try out the new guns (hellish double rocket launcher and flame thrower thing). Couldn't see any ammo for them, though. Are they unlimited?
