tinyE: Okay so I've derailed another thread but I think in a good way. So what makes it mindless as opposed to not mindless? I remember when I first played Duke 3D thinking how "complex" it was because your character kept saying stuff and you could interact with the environment be it toilets or the pool table or even strippers. Looking back on it the game is now the poster boy for brain dead shooting, but not so much when it came out.

Stevedog13: When talking about Duke Nukem the proper phrase is "Poster Man"

"Poster Dude" is also acceptable.
What about his royal dudeness?
I grew up on the "mindless" old-school shooters, so yes, I like them :D
Doom!!!

We joke but you know I almost feel like I am talking about "royalty" when I mention Duke. I kind of mean this with tongue In cheek but Duke has become a character who everyone knows and immediately recognizes. Go anywhere, any country, any place in that country and yell "Duke Nukem!" and I guarantee several people, even if they don't speak the same language as you, will turn around and reply, "Duke Nukem!".

darthspudius: Doom!!!
Doom II was the primary reason I learned how to properly use a computer as getting it to run wasn't easy at the time :D.

Wow, Brutal Doom looks amazing. I may just have to give that a try.
There's no such thing as a mindless shooter. There are only mindless players .

Definitely worth it - it breaths considerable life into the game. Remember when playing to press F1 (i think)
to see all of the extra features, e.g. headshots, finishing moves and executions.

It does look incredible, I'd love to see ports that polished-looking for games like Strife, Hexen, and Dark Forces.

I agree, I think it's all in how players approach a game. When I first played Blake Stone, I just killed every scientist because I didn't know which ones I could trust. Then, I got a sound card and when I heard their screams, I felt bad and started to be more careful. ;)

StingingVelvet: "Mindless?" Compared to Call of Duty Rise of the Triad is a fucking calculus test.
I saw this post earlier and I'm still trying to comprehend how mindless CoD must be.
