If so, you should really try Rise of the Triad: Dark War.

Yeah, it's not he best, but it sure is fun as hell. And some the weapons are so amazing.

So if you don't have it already, here's your chance: I pre-purchased the new game after watching the Q&A and I have this code to spare.

Why has the original poster not got more uprates? Usually when someone gives away a game they swiftly get quite a few.

I like what I see, mostly. The blood splatter on the screen and those melee kill moves I really don't like, but the game seems so fast paced, and movement looks really fluid.

I just arrived and hit the plus button. My work here is done. :D
+rep OP.

l0rdtr3k, you should really enjoy it! I've played all through 'The HUNT Begins' and 'Dark War'. I'm eagerly awaiting the RotT remake, it looks like it's doing the old game justice.
Are there any old school shooters that aren't mindless? It seems when the original Doom and Wolf3D were coming around they were still just focusing on the whole FPS concept and working on getting that right before moving onto actual story/dialogue/characters that you would come to see with games like Half-Life.

Happy to be of service. Might be a bit unfair to call System Shock an FPS, as it had so many other elements, but it did show that you can do more than just mindlessly shoot things. Hexen also had a good bit of puzzle-solving.

Shooters don't need story, in fact obnoxious scripted stories make them worse. Shooters are for shooting, if you want story = play RPG and adventures.

HL wasn't decent because of story, but because the lack of it, there were no cutscenes and the game let you play without obnoxiously getting in your way. What you mention as "story" in Half-Life wasn't story, it was narrative, the set-up of the Resonance Cascade and Black Mesa setting, there is no plot arc in HL beyond the final "mission" in Xen to kill the alien boss. It's like saying the Water chip in Fallout was the "plot".

Half-Life 2 had a little bit more of a "story" but it's mostly limited to hub locations where you meet up with Alex/scientist/Barnie, the backdrop stuff about the Combine's dystopian rule was narrative.

"Mindless?" Compared to Call of Duty Rise of the Triad is a fucking calculus test.
Okay so I've derailed another thread but I think in a good way. So what makes it mindless as opposed to not mindless? I remember when I first played Duke 3D thinking how "complex" it was because your character kept saying stuff and you could interact with the environment be it toilets or the pool table or even strippers. Looking back on it the game is now the poster boy for brain dead shooting, but not so much when it came out.

When talking about Duke Nukem the proper phrase is "Poster Man"

"Poster Dude" is also acceptable.
