No. Either the price has to be too good to pass up or I'll buy it when I'm ready to buy it. My backlog doesn't really affect purchase decisions. It allows me to be pickier, but I never really pass on a title I'm interested in. I'll either buy it now or later.

Leroux: I know it's all kind of silly and not seldom connected to OCDs, but I think an excess supply of entertainment can make a hobby feel like work sometimes, when it becomes overwhelming. So I can understand why the OP would try to avoid new purchases when still entertained by the games already owned.
I think you should remember that it's a hobby and nothing more. You are not supposed to do ANYTHING with your gaming. If you complete a game then that's great and if you don't then that's great too. I do understand that OCD part and I do feel that from time to time where I feel I MUST finish a game but then I take a step back, take a deep breath and remind myself it's just a hobby. Will you even remember the game years from now or what the ending was? I have games I did finish and yet the ending is fuzzy in my memory.
There are games that I'm happy that I finished like Half Life, Thief, Deus Ex and Morrowind but there are many, many others where it really didn't matter that I completed it because the ending sucked. So I try to finish the games I start but only if it's a game worth finishing - and generally I will say that if this is even an issue then the game isn't worth finishing because if it was then you wouldn't have to force yourself.
Take a step back and remember - it's just a game!

Sure, but I wasn't talking about games you think you MUST finish, but games you think you WANT to finish. ;)

Besides, how many people do you know who love to read but always shelve their books before finishing them? Or people who are into movies but only watch the first half of them? People who are happy to solve only half of a riddle, puzzle or jigsaw? People who leave the playing field after only half of a match? People with modelmaking as a hobby who abandon their models half-done? People who content themselves with knitting stuff noone can ever wear?

Of course, to a certain degree you can have fun doing all these things anyway and you probably can't quite equate the examples to gaming, but my point is that "it's just a hobby" is a bit too simple as an explanation as to why you shouldn't care about completing games. A "hobby" might be rather pointless, but it's seldom without purpose. Otherwise it's just a "pastime" - if that makes any sense in the English language -, something to kill time with, not necessarily something you're passionate about or very interested in. (And I doubt the majority of forum users here sees gaming as a "pastime" only. ;) )

Games really don't take that long to play/complete you know, what really takes up time is procrastination rather than the actual time spent playing.

Snickersnack: I used to have that problem but GOG and friends ran out of games. ;)

*Carefully reads EULA to see if it's permissible to bring DRM-free games with you into the afterlife.*
^ This pretty much.

I only get games from GOG and they still have a modest collection which greatly simplify things.

At 2 releases a week discounted (well, I'll get them when they are discounted unless I'm totally drooling over the game), it's quite manageable.

I definitely want a sale that interests me. A couple of titles have been lingering on my wishlist a long time now but I still can't bear to purchase them without a -50% off first.

I think it comes down to time - yes, most people will finish a 200 page book, 2 hour movie or a 20 min. run but how many will finish a 1200 page book, a 7 season/20 episodes pr. season TV series or a marathon? Only those that are REALLY dedicated I would say.
You are correct that we probably should do more to finish the games we start and if it's a 7-10 hour game then most of us can do that. But what about an 80 hour RPG where you get bored after 25 hours and now have to slog through over 50 hours just to finish it. Are you gonna do that?
But if I'm going to be completely honest here I agree that to say gaming is "just" a hobby or is just for "fun", kind of belittles it in a way I don't really like. Gaming means so much more to me than just a hobby or just fun - it's a huge part of my life and identity. But at the same time there is no inherent meaning to gaming - we are not achieving anything by gaming and it is a leisure activity. So yes, I'm a bit torn about this as-well.

nijuu: You know you want the latest Groupee's :P
Im sure they will be playing Football Manager 2013 ;)
Only FM13?
There will be 10000 new versions in next 10000 years and we will be stuck with one outdated version?
Is it Heaven or Hell?
I don't care, I just play games to entertain myself, not actually achieve some arbitrary 100% completion status or something. If I play 1 out of every 100 games, so be it. I don't consider my money wasted in that regard.
The answer would be... no? There were a bunch of sales I passed on that actually had games I may have had interest in simply because I have too many games as is right now. There's plenty of games in my backlog alone I actually want to play for which I even have a tough time finding the time to play. It's funny that for a while sales was the only means I bought games here for a while, but now I tend to only buy something I really want so I typically buy them on or around the time GOG (re-)releases them. In the grand scheme of things I'm still saving money as I'm buying a lot less now. I may splurge a little again around Christmas time, but that'll be about it.

So, yeah. I'm good. ;)
I do.
It cuts into my support for Star Citizen/Squadron 42
Lately, I'd like a sale that DOES interest me. Haven't done anything more than shrug at the sales over the last couple months...

I have this sad feeling that gaming is losing it's appeal to me...
Sometimes I just hope that there isn't a lot of arguing in a sale thread.

Yeah, what I meant to say is that most people here are "REALLY dedicated", as opposed to people who just play the occasional game as a pastime. That doesn't mean that they grind away just to finish each and every game they buy, of course. At least to me, completing a game just for the sake of completing it is not a very attractive idea either (although for more competitive gamers it might be), so if a game really begins to bore me, I have no problems to abandon it. But that's not really the "problem" I referred to; the issue I was talking about is when you have too many games you actually want to finish because they interest you, but you have trouble splitting your time between them or just can't decide which one to play.

Personally, I admit that nowadays the thought of an 80+ hours RPG kind of scares me off, because I'm almost certain that it won't be able to hold my interest for that long, now matter how good it's said to be. Therefor I've come to appreciate the shorter games.

Leroux: Snip.
You took the words out of my mouth and I think we completely agree on this :-)
