Bodkin: I haven't heard about lot of games. :) But i don't think that it is(was) PC game, right?
Yep, it was a Mac game. Probably the only really good Mac game. I played it on my school macs, pretty good.

Even though it was never properly released on PC, I always thought of it as "one of the games everybody knows of". Maybe I'm spending too much time on the internet ...
I wouldn't call it anywhere close to new, since it really came out in the same era as doom, but I haven't seen Dark Forces(same engine as Outlaws) mentioned. It and its first sequel had huge sprawling levels. Though the later 2 games in the series are still solid(built on the Q3 engine) they were more linear. If the XLengine project ever gets off the ground then Dark Forces, Outlaws, and Blood should be playable with sharper visuals.

Also I'm not sure its really all that exploratory but I liked Tron 2.0, which still holds out really well graphically . . . but then again I'm a Sci-Fi nut so Tron, Star Trek(Elite Force Series), and Star Wars are usually right up my alley.

Ghost Recon and its 2 expansion had huge sprawling levels but they really just gave you a number of ways to go after a given objective with limited enemies(I.E. they didn't respawn) and the one shot "kills" pretty much takes out any since of run and gun you may want.
Don't you remember playing Doom and having to pay for extra levels?
Or how the level design was simplistic and sometimes boring?
Or how they repeated the same enemies over and over again?

They are making games the same old way.
Compare Doom to the Call of Duty series.
The X-Men TC for Quake was fun.
i know of 2
pain killer and solider of foutrune.

No I don't agree.

DOOM and others like it had interesting a challenging maps. Often navigating them, finding that damn access card, and finding the secrets were more difficult then shooting enemies.

Call of Duty (which I also do enjoy) has become super linear. Just proceed down this path, wait until your teamates open the door and then continue to shoot russians/arabs. The first call of duty had some more interesting levels though.

Comparing doom to call of duty is like comparing Fallout to Mass effect, unless you think those two games are pretty much the same too.

If you pick the right elements you can do this with any two games, whether they really are similar or not. In this case, CoD and Doom are incredibly dissimilar, to the point where they might as well be different genres.

No, that's how they get you!

In all honesty, Dark Salvation is probably the worst game I have ever played, and is very, very far from the ideal of an 'old-school shooter'. Also, the save system is complete and utter shit. I have spent nearly... two years, I think now, trying to get past the first level. It wouldn't be so bad if it had a proper save feature. Instead when you die it dumps you at the beginning of the level. That works for, say, Serious Sam, because the levels aren't designed with god-awful jumping puzzles over lava and insta-kill spikes everywhere. It's decent when you're fighting enemies, at least. And it looks nice. I keep playing hoping that I can get past the first level and find that the rest of the game is wonderful, and has none of the issues of the first level.

I fear I will get past the first level and find more of the same.

Hmm... that could be frustrating, to say the least.

It is free, though. If you do play, be sure to send me a save file for level 2 if you get there.

I like the part where you think that anything other than completely obvious sarcasm is detectable on forums.

Seriously, I've heard people say things pretty damn similar to what you posted. And they were serious.

That's just it. FPS have diversified. Sure you wouldn't know it to look at the most popular games as they're all like Call of Duty.

Then there's the aforementioned arena shooters like Painkiller, Hard Reset and Serious Sam. All of which check many boxes of what you're after. All but one. As there's not much in the way of free roaming, aside from looking for secrets.

Then there are the games with RPG elements like Stalker, Precursors and the like, which if you want an open world in your FPS then that's ultimately what you're left with.

There are numerous other good modern FPS that do great things, such as the recently GOGed Cryostasis.
