Fuzzyfireball: EA should own the rights to Cybermage too, maybe we'll see it pop up here? ;0
That would be cool. I was never a big fan of first person shooters (I played a few shareware games when i was a kid) but i really enjoyed the Cybermage setting.
Has HARD RESET been mentioned? ;-P

Awesome game, really good. It combines, imo, the best of fast based Quake action with nice little modern gimmicks (upgrades and destructable enviroment). And it just looks sooooooooo good ...

I bought it before the bundle and haven't regretted it. Also, the Steam version gets a free content update later this month.
Shadowcaster needs a good modern remake...

QC: A quick run through of the list says that if it's on a modern console, the answer is usually going to be no.

The only thing that comes close, out of what games I can remember, still has RPG qualities to it (TES style weapon proficiency, a less reflective skill tree and multitudes of weapon management). That's Borderlands and is about the most open world you can get with a console FPS, and it has the advantage of being 4 person multiplayer. I don't think it's on PC.

etc

Best PC shooter in modern times. Clocked over 150 hours in it, and do not even touch multiplayer. Desperately waiting for Borderlands 2
The Darkness and Bioshock are certainly shooters that feel nonlinear and have you running around looking for paths and such. Not exactly the same as "back in the day" but roughly the modern equivalent (and a hell of a lot better than something like CoD).

A middleground is honestly best for me. When I replay Wolfenstein it's too much of a maze, it bugs me, but Doom is a lot more enjoyable.
It's not quite a modern FPS and certainly not AAA, but it's free: Harmony!

Fuzzyfireball: Alright, I'll just list them out. I found most to be decent or pretty good, but it's hard to find a game I'll really really dislike (It would have to be on the level of TekWar or Extreme Paintbrawl)
I don't recognize all the games, but, like... Shadowcaster? Wasn't it the 3D first person view action-RPG with some kind of simplistic Wolf3D or Doom engine? I wouldn't call it a shooter, albeit it was action (RPG). I had a love/hate relationship with it, ie. I did finish the game, but it somehow left a bad taste into my mouth.

One suggestion (older FPS): KISS Psycho Circus?

Someone mentioned it but since its had two recommendations I'll check it out now. I somehow completely missed this game but downloading the demo now.

Harmony looks interesting and you can't go wrong with free.

I also just remembered another old-school fps, "Outlaws" the old western by Lucasarts. That'd be a good one to get on GOG. I remember only playing the demo when it first released but having a lot of fun with it.

Oh yeah, "Outlaws" is great, maybe my favorite FPS, even though I never made it past the watermill level and always got stuck in the same place, despite resorting to walkthroughs (that also tend to curse this spot). :( Anyway, LucasArts on GOG.com would be the jackpot, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
No they don't make them like they used to. Current gen shooters are catered the ADD, I want everything now group.
Steel Storm 2 is promising a similar experience. Check out the dev blog on that site.

If you never played Steel Storm: Burning Retribution, it's a sweet indie game that feels like a beautiful cross-production of Quake and Future Cop: LAPD. There's a demo.

PMIK: So my question is, are there any modern FPS which follow in this same philosophy?
Yes. Go play Crysis and Crysis Warhead.
This is quite interesting find - http://source.bungie.org/ - never heard about it before, but Bungie... Halo? This is what they made before that?
