Elmofongo: Wish I could play Battlefield 1942, 2, and 2142 multiplayer, I never got a chance because I was too young and never owned a High end computer.
Don't need a high end computer for BF1942, COD1, MOH back then. Just a normal one will do. I had the Geforce 4200Ti which was a legendary value for money mid-range card back then.

1942 felt like real war. On our local 64 player server especially. Even better since we're all regulars and we know each ingame other well enough. Especially epic are the island maps with naval and land forces. Hell, there's even Coral Sea, a pure Naval map, focused on Carrier battles. I'd fly a bomber and bomb the enemy carrier as best as I can, eject when my plane is close to being destroyed, land on the enemy carrier and place landmines all over the flight deck then run off to hide while I watch the enemy get blown up trying to take off. Either that or I just use a bazooka. You got maps like Battle of Britain where you need to be focused on defending radar sites, dogfighting skills meant alot. I could go on and on really, you could get overwhelmed by enemy tank assaults only to have them all blown up by a hero flying a bomber on your team, freaking epic. Helps too that I'm a WWII nut.

kazmar: 1942 is available for free on origin :

http://store2.origin.com/store/eaemea/en_GB/html/pbPage.demos-en_GB#

I had a go when it got re-released and there were quite a few people running around (as it was "new"), I assume there are still people playing it, and if not it "shouldn't" be too hard to get together some people to play it as it's free and runs on modern systems...
My clan mates aren't around neither is the local server I play on.
I tried the Origin version, MP didn't work for some reason. So I just let it be.

Well Battlefield has been Replace by Arma when it comes to feeling like a real war, honestly one skirmish in that game felt more real and tense than anything Battlefield 3 tried to do. I really felt like a Greenhorn in Arma 2.

Lucky you. I was playing these on a Geforce2 MX400. Less than half the power of a Ti. They still ran pretty well, though I had to lower the graphics settings a little.

I'm not interested in modern warfare at all, only WWII. I bought BF2 then went back to 1942 shortly after. :D Not too interested in the BFs now especially under the EA now.

You do know there are WW2 mods for Arma 2.

Just like BF1942 having one of the most famous mods around: Desert Combat? I have Arma 2 sitting on my GoG shelves. Will check it out eventually. Right now I'm busy with other games atm.

Is the Desert Combat mod still up for graps, does Origin allow mods?

As for Origin, no idea. I don't let it run on my PC unless I'm playing one of the nearly non-existed Origin compulsory games I have.
