The only time I ever get messages from my operator is when I enter roaming abroad and they tell me the prices there are a f*ckload higher than at home. I'm with 3, by the way.

F4LL0UT: It's messages, not phone calls (also, phone calls from my operator are very rare and are usually of some importance or ACTUAL offers that might make sense for me). Oh yeah, my parents get those in Germany. Hasn't happened to me yet.
Too bad you can't reject messages... And in the US some carriers charge you for SMS received. Imagine if you hate someone >:)

Same here. I even get calls from MY company to change contract (and they always propose a more expensive contract)

The industry certainly discovered this feature. However I don't get advertisement because here consumer protection is relatively strong. Companies are required to ask you if they can send you advertisement (opt-in) and when filing the contract for my current mobile operator I simply didn't check the box. Some might still send you advertisement but then there is even a government website where you can report them and they may have to pay a fine (for unwanted sending of advertisment). It mostly works.

What you could do is sending your operator a message like: "I don't want advertisment. Stop sending me advertisment immediately or I will change the operator!"

Threatening them is the only chance of getting them to give in.

I don't get any spam apart from an official announcement about once a month, but my friend who has a different cell phone plan gets at least one spam SMS a week from the phone company. However, I've received several calls from newspapers hawking subscription, I don't even know how they got my phone number. Once a rival phone company phoned me to ask whether I'd like to take advantage of their special offer and go to them.

Nope, not in France. Last time I opened a land line, I was swarmed by commercial calls and scams (give you my bank account access numbers by phone? Sure thing pal!), but mobiles are relatively safe.

F4LL0UT: So, last year I switched to a new mobile phone operator and I observed something I hadn't ever seen before: spam. I keep getting messages with offers from the operator or their partners. The amount of those varies but lately I'm getting like two of them a day. It's incredibly annoying since normally when I get a message it's for a good reason and is more urgent than say an email.

The thing is that before I switched to this particular operator (one of the most popular ones in Poland and also a pretty good one, as far as I can tell) I had *never* seen anything like this, neither in Poland nor Germany. The only messages I got from my earlier operators concerned important stuff, for instance I'd get warnings when I was about to use up all my free minutes.

I was wondering whether it's actually a perfectly common thing these days (not just in Poland or Europe but in general) and in fact my earlier operators were exceptional in that they didn't bombard me with spam.
I get SPAM text messages all the time from my mobile phone operator but it is always from them(and for them) and nobody else. So it's not as bad as what you are dealing with.

Well, to be fair, the messages I get come directly from my operator, always the same phone numbers. Only the services they encourage me to use aren't always their own.

Same here. I guess paying $100/month to a full-service carrier buys you some advantages after all... as in, they don't feel the need to make up for any revenue shortfalls with annoying adverts.

An interesting thought. I did buy some higher priced phone from them, although I reckon it's more to the fact that I probably didn't fall into any of their "milking opportunity" categories. The last message I got from them was an offer to lower my billy of x amount per month if I extend my contract for an y amount of time, and the one before that for another offer concerning lower out of europe calling fees - dated more than half a year ago.

If my operator started sending me spam SMS, I'd look for another one that didn't, and make the switch. My old opeerator would likely ask me "why?", and proceed to tell me that I can talk to their customer service to stop the messaging, upon which I'd simply tell them "I shouldn't have to, good bye".

Not sure if this happens elsewhere but in the UK you can respond to a marketing text by sending the word "stop" in response. Doing so was the biggest mistake I've made since owning a mobile.....it just confirmed my phone number and I was then inundated with crap.
