....for fun that is. I seem to be the only person I know that reads books on a consistent basis. Is this just a local phenomenon, or is the past time known as "reading" a thing of the past? Hopefully it isn't and I can get an idea of what others are currently reading. I'm especially interested in what GoGers read.
I'm currently reading "Tales of the Cthulu Mythos". Its an anthology of short stories by H.P. Lovecraft and those that took his work as a basis for further literary exploration. I'm also reading a book from 1904 called "Famous Men of the Middle Ages". Has a lot about pre-christian oddities in it. Oh, and I'm finishing a Terry Pratchett anthology.
So, yeah. Anyone else?

I used to read all the time, then school started again and free time became a thing of the past...
I've read Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos, it was good; I actually got halfway through the Necronomicon before I ran out of time.

hmm perhaps you could recommend me some not so dramatic fantasy books?
I have read "Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin, but didn't enoyjed the way the story went

Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. If you're a Baldur's Gate fan and Drizzt Do'Urden says anything to you then it's a must read :D

I have to really recommend this: if you enjoy Lovecraft, or any good pulp fiction, you will do yourself a favour by checking out Robert E Howard's Conan stories. Storyline-wise, they're relatively straightforward, but they are so gripping, I literally sweat profusely when reading. (Ok has something to do with the humidity here too) Conan is quite possibly one of the most interesting characters I've ever come across - and he has nothing in common with the 1982 movie's Conan, except that both are, well, barbarians from Cimmeria.
Anyway, right now I'm reading Jack London's White Fang. Not too bad, pretty good.

I'd recommend all the books by Robert E Howard. These include Conan, Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane and Kull. They are all low fantasy; Solomon Kane is somewhat of a mix between fantasy and pseudo-history. All very gripping and tense. Besides Conan, I really like Solomon Kane too. It's story is even more straightforward than Conan's, but wow the energy is so powerful in the story, that it threatens to come alive.

I've been trying to catch up on reading classics/older books, the books which always seem to make it to the various 'top 100 all time books lists' but which I'd missed - though I'm sneaking in some cyberpunk inbetween, which as a genre I also hadn't read that much of before but I'm enjoying a lot. My reading backlog is almost on the same level as my gaming backlog thanks to Amazon and impulse buying.
Overall I'd say I read less than I used to due to time constraints, but even on the busiest days I still tend to read at least a chapter or two before going to sleep. One day I'll catch up.

Crime and Punishment and cyberpunk? Dostoevsky and William Gibson? Sounds about right! I think if the two had been contemporaries they would have gotten along great.
Well its good to know I'm not the only one reading! Lowyhong recommended Conan. Interestingly enough my uncle is a huge fan of Robert E. Howard and bought me a Conan omnibus. I just haven't had the time to read them yet. Also I haven't read White Fang yet - Instead I read Martin Eden by Jack London. Not at all like his nature writing, but intellectually satisfying.
I've wanted to read the Gormenghast Trilogy for quite some time. But like Goatbrush I think I've let my buying get way ahead of my free time!

Was just looking at my recent acquisitions and realised Storey publishing has been seeing a lot of my $$ lately.... :-)

You are always recommending Conan, no matter what said person enjoys. It's like Fallout being ever present in recommended games on GoG.

I have a stack of books in both English and Japanese that I would love to read, I just don't have the time to these days =/ But back when I was younger with a lot more free time, I went through books like there was no tomorrow.
When I do have time to read though, I'm very partial to mysteries, thrillers, autobiographies (especially those written by people who lived though the cultural revolution), science fiction, horror (mainly in Japanese), and anything by Harry Harrison or Hoshi Shin'ichi.
