Yeah, I've heard War in the Pacific is the ultimate Strategy Wargame.

Has anyone asked Matrix/Slitherine lately about chances it will come to GOG one day?.I mean since they are releasing on Steam, surely they must be open to other stores now as well?

I've mentioned it, but never got an answer.

Of course you need to take into account that four years ago Steam was never going to be an option . . .

Are you sure this is still the case with this DW: Universe package? I failed my save vs. temptation check and got the Steam version yesterday - loving it, even though I've spent most of the time with tutorials and the manual so far - and the game required no SN or activation of any sort after installation. In fact, it's even "launcher-free" (as close as Steam gets to DRM-free) after being installed; it can be launched and played from the game directory regardless of whether Steam is running.

Buying it from matrix direct, there is a serial number for installation. And with that version, thats also the number you use on the slitherine site, to generate a steam code.

Ive yet to play this and hadnt played shadows either. I had distant worlds, return of the shakturi and legends already and had been meaning to get shadows for a while but id been away from the game a fair amount of time.

The current deal matrix has made me bite the bullet and buy shadows yesterday, which also facilitated me to end up getting universe for 8 quid. (Having all four previous titles generates a $40 off coupon) Which i thought was a bargain. Shadows was only about 15 itself. Both of these are download prices and not physical.

I don't know about the Steam version, but the Matrix version uses a Serial Number.

The Matrix version is a stand alone installer, so you can archive/move it as needed and only need the S/N (no Server/Online activation stuff).

Also, if you buy it on the Matrix site all you need to do is register your S/N for a free Steam Key as well.


FYI - they've released a Beta Patch (1.9.5.1) today to fix a few things - one of which is making the Font larger in some places (some people had issues with it).

Ah okay, thanks for the info both of you. The Steam version not requiring an SN had made me wonder if they'd moved away from that method of registration/activation, but no matter. Sounds like the two versions are slightly different prior to installation (one requires an SN. the other requires installation through client), but effectively the same once installed.

Anyway, definitely an excellent 4x game, albeit one that makes me yearn for the days of thick, printed manuals; soooo many mechanics to look up, and flicking through a PDF just isn't the same. :)

I'll just wait for a GOG release, my backlog is big enough.

Last time I spent that kind of money on a game was San Andreas

I found out about this game a while ago. At the time, had it been availible on steam i might have picked it up. Right now its not good enough for me to consider steam drm. If it shows up on gog we'll see if/when it happens.

my advice, get it from matrix games direct then, if you arent in to steam, its worth it, its so worth it. the amount of game and hours youll get for your money is phenomenal.

i really dont understand peoples insistence on spiting themselves and not using steam or origin et al, i mean its of course their choice, i just dont get it.

no doubt ill get a whole lecture on why not to use it and why people dont etc, which im not really interested in, and would be a wasted effort, as i use both, with 281 games on my steam library alone, a measly 6 on origin.... one of which is titanfall yay!

regards to this, i honestly dont imagine it turning up here, or many of the other matrix published games, i just dont see it. if it happens, its a loooooong long way off.

Yeah, almost £40 for me, last time I paid that much for a game was, uh, well, never. At least not all in one big lump -- Crusader Kings 2 is probably hovering around that (just checked, maybe around £32 and I have everything up to and including Rajas of India, discounting music packs) but that was over the course of about 9 months and largely during sales.

Do I still want the game? Yeah; strategy games always have a long-lasting appeal to me, but I'm still uncertain about putting down that amount of money in one go.

I suppose that's understandable pricing for them then.
Just thinking all the wonderful games available these days, wondering if people would rather buy a great game, a few or more years old though, costing them 5-20 euros or just go and spend triple to this one.
I wish the game great sales though.
