Uhm. I just got home with Civ 5 retail version, and I can't find any trace of an activation key anywhere. The jewel case just contains a sheet with three codes for downloadable content and a tech tree poster. The key isn't on or inside the jewel case, and it isn't on the CD.

Did I just get a bogus copy of Civ 5? Or where have they hidden the activiation key?

Well, at first I'd try registering that 3 codes on Steam.

It's on the back of the manual, near the bottom if I remember right.

By manual, I mean that 4 page booklet with the very basics needed to install. The only other thing included with the tech tree.

I've tried that. It then asks me to activate the required product for using the content, which is Civ 5, first.

There isn't a manual in mine. It's not been tampered with either, because it came factory sealed. Maybe it's just a fluke.

Yea, this. It's not a "manual" in the conventional sense, it's about 8 pages long, has installation instructions, very brief instructions on the general aspects of the game, and mine had a Civilization board game ad on the back of it. CD Key was listed right under that.

Yeah, manual here... should definitely come with one. Take it back to the store and tell them it did not include the manual and do a same-item swap.

Is it possible to get a non-steam version of Civ V?

I'm not installing that cr*p on my computer, and so will be giving Civ V a miss if I can't get get a boxed copy wihtout steam.

Civ 5 is a steamworks game, so every version will necessarily require Steam to run.

See I dont get this ok it's DRM but it's not you must have the disc in at all times/must be connected at all times type evil. yeah it takes a little memory space but if your computers newer than 2001 (2005 for laptops) you wont even notice it's there. Install game ->menu->offline mode done you never have to go online again or you can leave it on and get patches mods and access to steamcloud saves you make on any other computer with civ 5... Think of it as saying yes DRM is evil but if you HAVE to use it don't be a douche use something simple.

Theres already work arounds out there they just have dubious legality in the UK right now...
