Diablo 1 easily ranks in the top 10 games I've ever played. The depressive, dark atmosphere is really unique, something that was lost in the sequel. Sure, there's more content and things to do in Diablo 2, but sometimes less is more, and that's why I prefer the original.

Also, if not for the proliferation of hacks, the freedom of the PvP system is something that is extremely refreshing when compared to all of the rules found in today's games. In theory, the game population could police itself since everyone was free to be as treacherous as they wished.

As for Diablo 3, I'm not really that excited for it. It looks like the art direction has gone the way of World of Warcraft, more in line with the cartoonish style of Diablo 2. Also, I'm not sure what else could be added to the Diablo formula to make for a better experience.

Chevve: Some interesting things happened... None of the compatibility modes yielded a different result except for Windows 2000. Now the graphics problem is gone, but it tells me that I don't have the Diablo CD inserted. How exactly do I turn it into a virtual disc?

Btw, thanks a ton for helping me out. :D

hedwards: I believe if you right click on the disk in my computer there should be an option to create ISO from disc. Otherwise Infrarecorder or any number of other CD burner programs should be able to copy a disc to image.

FWIW, I'm not sure how much time it's really worth working on this as the game really is quite lack luster compared with even games from a decade ago.
Yeah, I think I'm done fooling around with it now. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the CD. When I run in compatibility mode for 98 or '00, it says it's unable to read the diabdat file. ;o Thanks for the help.

Crack the game, and run it in 98 / ME compatibility mode, and with admin rights. Make sure that the game is installed outside system-wide folders. Also, make sure to have the Screen Resolution window open before starting the game.
Diablo 3 is the most anticipated game EVER for me, and that's because of Diablo 2.

I spend so many nights playing Diablo 2 + LOD (expansion pack) on Battle.net around 10-11 years ago. It's the best game ever.

I played the first one, but never completed it. It has a unique atmosphere, but Diablo 2 is so much better.

Diablo 1 only has 1 main town, and in the whole game you just go deeper through the same dungeon. Diablo 2 has 4 acts with 4 different main towns, lots of different and varied locations, and 1 extra act added in LOD. Also Diablo 1 only has 3 characters, Diablo 2 has 5 (7 with the expansion).

Diablo 2 is a much deeper experience, with more interesting items, skill options and so on.

I would recommend playing Diablo 2 before Diablo 3 gets released, since there's a lot of more story in the second game, than in the first. I don't think you should miss it, also it has aged a lot better than Diablo 1 has. And if you're really into the Diablo universe and lore after completing Diablo 2, you should buy Book of Cain as it contains lots of lore.

Also i recommend playing on closed Battle.net or playing it with some buddies. I only played Diablo 2 online, and it's a lot more fun to play with others and have people to trade with.

Battle.net is the online service which all Blizzard's games are using. Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft for instance.

As others have stated you can buy it on www.battle.net, www.amazon.co.uk or buy a cheap key from www.g2play.net to register on battle.net.
I played the first Diablo game when it was new and had a lot of fun with it. Yes, it was simple fun but I enjoyed it very much just the same and loved the atmosphere and excellent music.

I never did play Diablo II though. I wonder if the version Blizzard is selling for download directly from their store actually works without any issues on Windows 7 64 bit though. I noticed that the system requirements only list XP and Vista for Diablo II along with the original Star Craft games. I might buy these if I knew they run fine in Windows 7.
