I bought a copy from somebody here, I can't recall off the top of my head, but I bought the code and then just registered it with Blizzard.

hedwards: Diablo has basically no replay value and is pretty mindless. That being said, I'm sure it was cheap and probably worth the bargain, but it pales in comparison to Diablo II or anything more recent.
For the sake of being fair to Diablo, I wouldn't compare it to anything made today because, I mean let's be honest, games have changed. As for Diablo II, I really hope it isn't as bad as you say it is. I'd be willing to give a try, but is it really that much worse?

I was going to just completely slam the game, but if you can pick it up for a couple bucks it's probably worth that. But the only interesting thing about it is the gaming history it represents. The aesthetic and mood are great, but you can't build a game completely on those two things. Diablo II was infinitely better in pretty much every other way and does have some replay value to it.

You'd have to play it to see what I mean, but there's very, very little reason to play the game through more than once. There are a small number of quests that show up randomly and 3 classes, but considering the near complete lack of diversity or variety I never bothered.

It's mostly just a tedious click fest that's more of an OCD ritual than actual game. At the time it wasn't as obvious because the graphics were good for the time and there weren't better options available.

Well, alright then, I'll take your word for it. If I can find it on the cheap, then I'll give it a go, but from the sound of it, it's not worth more than that. I'm guessing that's probably why they removed it from newer versions of the Battle Chest :p
Oh man, I remember spending hours upon hours on Diablo 1. I found the installation CD lying around a few months ago, but it isn't very compatible with my Windows 7. It makes me sad to hear people are slamming the game when I'm dying to get it working again. D:

WarZombie: I can't speak for Diablo, but Diablo II is one of the greatest games ever created. You owe it to yourself not just as a lover of RPGs, but as a gamer, to play Diablo II. Yes, it is that good.

This thread has inspired me to go and buy a copy of Diablo, seeing as how I missed out on it the first time.

Diablo has replay value in playing again to see what new sidequests you get....also the random dungeons mean you don't always get the same layout each time. I agree D2 is a bit better though, but I will always have a soft spot in me heart for good old Diablo.

It isn't working for you? Ironically enough it's working fine for me on Win 7 64bit.

Yeah, everything is all discolored when I try playing it. I can barely read anything in the menus. I'm sure there's a simple fix for it, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out.

Sounds like the graphics drivers are to blame. Updating them should fix the problem. The only graphics problems I'm having are that the original game was in 16bit color or something like that.

Hm. I updated my drivers and it's still the same. I think this has something to do with my worn out Diablo CD. The whole game runs off it, doesn't it?

When I found my CD a few months ago, the game looked and ran fine when I first played it. Then when I tried it the next day, it had this graphics problem.

You could try compatibility mode or if you think it's the disc, rip the disc to disk and load it as a virtual disc that should work as well.

Some interesting things happened... None of the compatibility modes yielded a different result except for Windows 2000. Now the graphics problem is gone, but it tells me that I don't have the Diablo CD inserted. How exactly do I turn it into a virtual disc?

Btw, thanks a ton for helping me out. :D

I believe if you right click on the disk in my computer there should be an option to create ISO from disc. Otherwise Infrarecorder or any number of other CD burner programs should be able to copy a disc to image.

FWIW, I'm not sure how much time it's really worth working on this as the game really is quite lack luster compared with even games from a decade ago.
