hedwards: I think it probably has something to do with the way it was produced, you know the reusing of models and that it added functionality that should have been in the base game.

Stuff: I agree, still we had a blast with the game having exhausted D1, Hellfire was greatly appreciated when released . . . =)
Don't get me wrong, I don't really get why people complain about the expansion, I have it and loved it, but it does suffer from a few obvious problems that were the result of apparent penny pinching.
If you have any experience with rogue likes, you might have a basic idea of what Diablo is all about. You venture down into randomly generated dungeons, kill stuff, level up and get better equipment. Unlike most rogue likes the Diablo games are rather forgiving (there is a perma-death mode in diablo 2 though), and combat is more about action than tactics and planing. Also, unlike most rogue likes, the game won't just randomly punish you for believing that you could beat it (anyone who has ever played a real rogue like and died because of a missidentified healing potion knows what I'm talking about...).

You don't need to play Diablo 1 in order to enjoy Diablo 2. While Diablo 2 makes a few nods towards its predecessor (and there is one part in the first world that just won't mean anything to you unless you have played the first game), the games are not really about the story as much as it is about monster slaying.
Diablo 2 was, from a mechanics point of view, the stronger of the two games. It offers more variety, the classes each differ a lot more, there are more skills and abilities, combat flows better, but Diablo 1 just had a far better ambiance. I was disappointed with Diablo 2, because its locations (with only a few exceptions) failed to evoke any real feelings what so ever, and they felt too diverse, and as a result a bit incoherent. Diablo 1 on the other hand had a very oppressive feel to it. It was dark, the world felt threatening and far more fitting for its source material. Also, I thought the enemies looked far more intimidating.

In my opinion, the games gets far too repetitive. There is not enough variety in them compared to their length and they will start to feel like they overstay their welcome by around the halfway point (at least they did to me).

Getting the games is not hard. The old battle chest (which is what you want, don't buy the new one) costs $20 used on Amazon, and it will contain the original game (without its semi-official expansion) , and Diablo 2+expansion. You can also buy the games individually for between $5-$10. You want the expansion for Diablo 2. Getting the expansion for Diablo 1 is a bit more expensive ($15-$20 used), and I found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. Some new gameplay mechanics were quite good, others were not, and the new levels were inferior to the ones in the original game. If you can find it for a good price, pick it up, but don't go out of your way trying to get it.

I agree again, no denying it had it's problems, same as any game.

I guess my point is that is was great fun for those that had played D1 into the ground. The new character, spells, etc, etc were a breath of fresh air. When the expansion was released it breathed new life into the game in spite of it's short comings. To say it doesn't "count" is something those of us who enjoyed the game will always find humorous . . .=)
Blizzard doesn't even sell a lot of their older titles, perfect canidates for GOG. Warcraft and Diablo. Oh well.

Try both, they're great games.

danteveli: In my opinion Diablo 1 is way better than 2. It has that really dark eerie climate. Its really worth to play it.
Agreed, but only in the setting aspect. DO NOT play II before I. Not because of story or the rest, but you will drive yourself insane with the abject stupidity of the controls in I after playing II where they cleaned it up. If you just go straight with I you wont notice it as much until carpel tunnel kicks in.

You will be screaming at Goatmen in no time!
Diablo 1 has a far, far better atmosphere than 2.

2, however, imo, is a better game overall. It was at least more fun to play.

They bundle some of their old games with their collector's edition of new games. You get SC1 with SC2 CE.

Of course, considering that it takes them years to actually make a sequel (just look how long it took from SC1 -> 2 and now D2 -> 3), this IS kind of annoying if you want a new copy of their older games.

at least for Diablo 2, maybe you can find someone who does not play it anymore and is fine to give you his key. You can register that key on blizzards website and then you can download the game directly from them, fully patched.

But in my opinion, I do also liked D1 much more than 2.
I much, much prefer Diablo 1 to Diablo 2, however, Diablo 2 is great fun of you get a friend or two to play with you. Also, for Diablo 2, try the Median XL mod. And I do like Diablo: Hellfire, even with it's little problems, it's just a bit of a pain to get nowadays, since as was noted before, Blizzard doesn't like to talk about it.

They would have to if I was writing fluff for it though.

...I wish I could write fluff for them.

Because Holy Blizzard renounces it.

I hadn't considered that, I suppose that's the same reason why people defend SC2 when it's basically just SC with all sorts of adjustments made to make it less fun and more of a pain to play with.
I can't speak for Diablo, but Diablo II is one of the greatest games ever created. You owe it to yourself not just as a lover of RPGs, but as a gamer, to play Diablo II. Yes, it is that good.

This thread has inspired me to go and buy a copy of Diablo, seeing as how I missed out on it the first time.

Diablo has basically no replay value and is pretty mindless. That being said, I'm sure it was cheap and probably worth the bargain, but it pales in comparison to Diablo II or anything more recent.
You should be able to pick a copy of either from pretty much any store that sells PC games.
