What's Gamers Gate like as a service? Do you have to install a client or is it more like GOG?

No client. Each game has it's own downloader, once everything is done downloading you can backup the installation files. My favourite download store after GOG ;)

Each game has it's own small downloading program that downloads the game files. The downloader also encrypts the exe file after installation completes. The encryption can be avoided by copying the downloaded game folder somewhere else when installer pops up so you can make working backups at least of games that don't have DRM.

Don't know about you guys, but I could literally not step two feet and not stumble into a cheap Deus Ex these days. Not saying that's bad, on the contrary, it's great that such a great game should be played by the masses who missed out on it before.
I almost bought it on Gamersgate, but it says the game isn't compatible with Windows 7. Is there a workaround to get it to run on Win7 64 ?
Dues Ex 2 is also up for the same price, I'm kinda thinking that from the stupid low prices they have got on these two titles combined with the similarly stupid low prices GG has got on a few EA games right now: EA and SE are probably those two "signed" partners GOG hinted about.

(how I get this is that I'm taking this as a sign that GamersGate knows full well that once these games hit GOG they will never sell another copy of them 'cause everyone's getting them here, so they are having a fire sale for a last ditch buck of em.)

Run as admin. Many games work fine that way :)

My old Sold out version works perfectly (at least for the first 10 minutes) on Win7 64 bit. Don't know why that version should have any problems.

I'm not sure it's encryption, it just renames the installer and then renames it back after it's done. A few game installers won't run if you don't give them the proper name though.

Thanks for the answer. At this price, I think I'll take my chances.

This sounds confusing to me. You mean, after you download the game, but before you install it, or...what?

Yes, I suck at computers. Badly.
the installer unpacks into a temp file, then kills that temp file after it's done installing the game.

if you dig that unpacked installer out of the temp file before it gets trashed you can save it.

I don't really understand why you would want / need to when it's not like GG's installers call home to mommy before they unpack.

download -> unpack -> install -> ask for your serial number -> cleans up instillation files -> retreats back into it's compressed file and sits there.

so even if you dig the unpacked instillation out of it's temp file you still need to plug in your serial number, why not just keep the compressed file instead of the uncompressed one?

*edit*

as for the downloader it's self: it's a 280kb self contained file that only downloads the specific game game it's for, there is no client and the downloader doesn't even install, it's just an .EXE.

it works pretty much the same way as downloading a f2P mmo.

Gamersgate are pretty good. The trick is to backup your games with the installer running (which starts as soon as the downloader has done its job). It's a bit of a pointless inconvenience to make you have to do that, but it''s otherwise a very good service overall.

The downloader starts installer automatically when whole game is downloaded. You simply leave the installer up and go to 'gamersgate temportaty files' folder and copy the game directory somewhere else and then proceed with installtion (or channel it and try intalling from your backup if you want to verify it works). When the installation using downloader is finnished or channeled it gives you choise of keeping the files (exe will be encrypted and you'll need to restart downloader to decrypt it. This is why you need to copy the folder while installer is up as that's when the exe is decrypted as it's needed for installation.), restarting the installer or deleing the files.
