You always have people who buy only the provider. If this was 2005 or 2006 and it was Valve games and a few indie games then I'd agree, but Steam is growing fast and is attracting tons more then just Valve lovers.

actually, it's more along the lines of the best selling games for Xbox 360 are Grand Theft Auto 4 and Gears Of War 2 (which is surprising because it's crap, but I suppose it was about the hype), Gears of War, Fable 2, etc...
These games were not developed by Microsoft. :D

Maybe not, but strictly speaking most of them are still Microsoft-games. GeoW 1 & 2 were published by Microsoft, and Fable 2 was developed by an internal Microsoft-studio (Lionhead). Also, Halo 3 outsold all of them. :)

About Steam: while reading comments on Creative Assembly's forum regarding Steam in Empire Total War, i can see that people are crying out loudly "OH WHY THE HECK YOU USED IT?"
It's interesting to note that from gamer's point of view, Steam brings only disadvantages. You have to be connected and register the game you purchased. You still buyed it, so you own a box and before Steam came out, it was sufficient. Now it isn't. Regardless of the particular game being Valve's or not.
For people buying games on Steam - it's a different story. But for me it would be fine if Steam just served as a content delivery platform. Combining it with DRM sucks for people who don't want to have anything to do with the store part (majority?). The point is: developers are using Steam against the will of legitimate gamers. They have right to do what they please with their games, but in turn, I should vote by letting my cash flow to publishers who actually respect me. Like gog or Stardock's Impulse.

For one thing, your rant only matters when you have the cd/dvd of the game and can still download.
If your legitimate, and your cd/dvd breaks, then you can't exactly pirate the game can you? Your SOL, something you won't be with Steam. That right there doesn't bring only disadvantages.
I love how people who demand disks believe stuff like steam to have disadvantages. You kinda hafta register games on disks with cd keys anyway, and then there's the whole issue of loading the disk every time ya play.
Then there is the being able to download and play the day the game comes out versus racing off to a store.
Speaking of disadvantages, what the heck do you mean by steam is nothing but disadvantages, but buying from Steam is different? That doesn't make sense.
You also kinda hafta register your game on Stardock, esp. if you buy in store, so the argument that Stardock is better in that regard goes down the toilet.
If you can't get broadband, or have a low cap, then Steam has diadvantages. But to anyone who does, Steam is a HUGE advantage, provided you can go past the Steam EULA without disagreeing and running to get your tinfoil hat.
Which I honestly think is what is going on here. TBH I highly doubt people saying Steam hurts legitimate gamers are actually legitimate. Not saying you specifically pirate Thar, but I've suspected alot who say this type of thing, and Steam allows you unlimited reinstalls, theres nothing that harms you except the thought you have to log online.
That and I highly suspect some people don't like change at all and demand they have their boxes.

No they arent. They are microsoft games. Unreal Tournament 3 is an Epic game. GOW 1 and 2 are properties of microsoft, they hired Epic to develop them, but they belong to microsoft, threfore, theyre microsoft games.

Buying from Steam is different than having Steam only for registering at it because publishers decided that they will go for it with their boxed games. For me, Steam adds unnecesary portion of problems. Have you ever heard of gamers that paid for having game before others, as prelease... And weren't able to play it since Steam had it's date set for the premiere?
As with Stardock's Sins of a Solar Empire - single player is available without registering at all, and for multi you need internet no matter what, so registering doesn't hurt. Can you see now just how it is better than DRM that depends on being online and at the right day?
You've made a statement that it's illegitimate gamers who are bashing Steam, but you didn't care to back it up with any real arguments - and honestly, it makes no sense. Games from Steam are being pirated as well, with no more difficulty than non-Steam games. Gamers who just download game from torrents are (as usual) at an advantage here - they don't have to bother with some untrusted DRM roaming through their firewall, don't have to install web store client they never wanted, they just don't have anything to bash Steam for.
Oh and fyi. I am happy to live in a country where law allows me to make backups at will. Breaking game disc is not a problem for me.
