F1ach: So, maybe it is just a bug and not the XP booster causing the problem. I'd love to see the maths on how the booster works though.
avatar
F4LL0UT: I presume that it's just the base experience reward times the XP level or at least almost the level as the amount of items you need to gain a whole level doesn't change that much over the course of the game. Wouldn't be too hard finding it out by comparing how the reward changes each time you visit the guys of the continues quests. I might actually check it out on my next playthrough. I wouldn't be surprised if the math changes due to an update by then, though.

Btw, I'm still not far into the game (just met Kessler) but I really love that this time your character says more than just "yeah" when talking to NPCs. Also the NPCs seem to say slightly different things depending on who you play as. Great improvement, makes Riptide feel much more like an RPG than before. Since you're playing in coop: can you say something about what the dialogue looks like when playing with multiple characters? Do the NPCs talk to the whole group or does everyone hear his own individual dialogue?
I havent played CoOp mate sorry cant tell you anything about it tbh.

How are you getting on with the new bloke, would you recommend him at all? I've only played as Purna and Xian a few times in DI a bit of Logan (didnt like him too much in DI), never tried Sam, Purna would be my favourite, just for her gun affinity and passives, then Xian for slice and dice, I would easily recommend Logan for DI:R as you can get him decent skills right from the start and they are good skills for the way enemies try to mob you, with his AoE and Boomerang, he's an easy playthrough for me and alcohol will heal him.

korell: Steam Support finally attached Dead Island Riptide to my account (they also removed Dark Souls). So now I just have to get the game installed. Don't know whether I'll be able to use the retail disc to install it, though. Worth a try, but I might just have to download it all through Steam.

Didn't get an apology though.
I would suggest use Steam totally, to prevent any other mix ups mate.

I'm glad you got sorted relatively quickly, its annoying buying a good game and not being able to play it and discuss it while everyone is on basically the same experience curve.

Good luck with the install and looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it :)

Do you mean as regards buying from Steam instead of retail? The reason I went with retail rather than buying through Steam is that I got a much better price and contents through retail than Steam could offer.

No mate, I was suggesting you dont mix the DVD data with the steam data, just in case patching through steam screws something up, considering the problems you have had with the retail box so far, I'd try to keep it out of the loop :)

Well, once it is installed I then have the Survivor Pack and Fashion Victim DLC codes to apply. Hopefully those two codes will work. Should know pretty soon.

The conversation you get is for the person who takes or hands in the quest. Like if I take a quest the NPC will be talking to my Sam B, and he'll talk back to her, and that's what my companion Xian Mei will hear as well. The NPC does not involve the whole group or all players or something sadly. What I do like is that if I'm not close enough when the GF hands in a quest, you'll still hear the conversation over the walkie, which is pretty neat.

Is the FV dlc just for Co-Op?

No idea. It was part of the better deal I got with the retail copy, so I snapped it up.

UPDATE: The Survivor Pack and Fashion Victim DLC codes both seem to have activated fine. Now finally I can get to play, at about 2 and half days after release.

Great to hear it! :)

Pheace: That said, at the point where we are there's a continuous turn-in quest that I could buy at the store, so if we wanted we could abuse that like crazy. That probably wasn't intended :)

F4LL0UT: I think they have already fixed it, the scaling I mean. I just delivered painkillers to the guy in Halai and instead of the whoopin' 16k XP I got yesterday I only got 2k. So while you can still get a lot of XP this way you certainly can't skip a few levels in one run anymore. It's a good thing but part of me is sad. :D

Edit: Oh, sorry, I misread the XP popup. It was 20k, not 2k. Dang. Hope they'll take care of it soon. <.<
It only seems to take maybe 15-20 turn ins to level, of course, if you're actually out picking up the crap organically you probably already got another level and a half just kicking zombie ass.

I didn't realize there was an infinite turn in store thing, I suppose I don't mind as I am happy not to abuse it unless I want to (e.g. getting a new character up for co-oping with a friend or something).

F1ach: How are you getting on with the new bloke, would you recommend him at all?
If you're willing to do the dance with fist weapons the new guy does serious damage. His running kick is insane, it's like Sam B's tackle only I'm pretty sure it uses way less stamina and it's faster. If you get overwhelmed you can use it to get rid of one of the zombies temporarily (or often permanently, it does some decent damage) while you deal with the others. He also has a pretty gnarly uppercut in his combat tree that's perfect during a Thug or Butcher taunt scream. Obviously the trouble with him is you can't stun some enemies without a 2 handed weapon, I actually like the mods on blunt weapons so I went ahead and used those as his backups (since you level weapon types now).

He seems to be somewhere between Xian and Sam B in resilience, Xian still dies easier, this guy doesn't tank anywhere near as well as Sam B.

Oooh, I forgot my favorite running kick strat, kick them into a wall or a tree, they fly so fast they take massive impact damage, it'll usually kill them.

StingingVelvet: Reviewers continue to be baffled by the idea of "more of that first game, thanks."

Not that I am defending this game, I have no interest in this series, but offering people more of something isn't inherently bad. Placing innovation over fun is not inherently journalistic, or whatever. Kind of annoying.
Yeah this is a bit silly, they added a lot more story and made minor tweaks, the game is largely the same game, but they took the players' feedback and implemented it (e.g. the shooting is way better now).

They don't need to radically change a winning formula. I mean, DA2 would have been just fine if they'd just given you more DA:O with a new story, less issues (quest, dialog, etc.), and then just focused on incremental improvements overall.

Well, in answer to your original question, Fashion Victim DLC is just for co-op as you don't see yourself in game other than your hands out in front of you. Not seen a cutscene since I chose the survivor skin, but as they are pre-rendered movies they won't reflect the outfit you are wearing. As such, I really can't see why anyone would buy it as you get nothing out of it for yourself, it is other players who get to see your character looking slightly different. Glad I got it free with my retail disc.

Here is a video showing the new skins. Very little difference in appearance in my opinion.

Thanks for the links mate, I see what you mean, its just as well they were free :)

Oh, dang, must have gotten confused somehow. Could have sworn you were the guy playing coop with his GF.

Well, I definitely like the new guy. Also he is voiced by Total Biscuit (not really). Then again: I also loved playing as SamB. :P It's interesting that he has such a small weapon range and you've really got to get in close, also it's a lot harder to hit arms with hand-to-hand weapons so he certainly feels a little harder to play at first. However, he does get some powerful moves, many of which throw the enemies around all the time. So he certainly does play differently than the other melee characters.

Actually you DO see your body when looking down and also during certain moves. I can't tell whether you can see the changes to your own skin because in case of my character (John) the DLC skin is ridiculously similar to the original one. I presume that you DO see the differences when playing with some of the other characters, though.

Actually pretty much all of them are real-time with the intro being the only exception I have seen so far. The cutscenes still seem to always use the original skin, though.

So, when not playing, I like to watch these two UK TV zombie shows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Flesh_(TV_series)

The dead have arisen as zombies, but now have been "cured", this series is about re-integrating them into society.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Set

This is where a zombie outbreak occurs in britain and the only survivors are the contestants in The Big Brother House. I dont know which is more scary, the zombies or the fact that the only surviving gene pool consists of Big Brother contestants, either way the human race is screwed.

Really liking them alot.
